Introduction Power*Log(PetrographicalOfficeWellsiteEvaluation andReporting) is a chip and core logging management program that utilizes single-entry data capturing to produce geological striplogs. The geological data is entered into the system through the use of intuitive data entry forms to ensure standardization of data. This data is stored in an RDBMS(Relational Database Management System) to allow data manipulation using SQL access tools. Power*Log software consists of four (4) main parts: 1.)A log editor module that allows you to change the striplogs to suit your needs and preferences. 2.)A data transfer module. 3.)Report printing modules. 4.)familiarize you with the commands and functionsAn on-line help system that is designed to available inPower*Logand lead you through many of the processes involved in creating logs. A note about navigating through Power*Log:When you are entering information into data forms, you may move between boxes/fields by pressing theTabkey to go forward andShift +Tabto move backwards. To exit forms that do not have anExit, OK,orCancelbutton,presstheEsckey on the keyboard. To access the On-line Help System in Power*Log: You can make use of the context sensitive help by pressing theF1key when you are in a dialogue box. A pertinent help file will appear, opened to the topic relevant to the dialogue box you are in. Below are some examples of common features within Power*Log: The Toolbar

The Status Bar TheStatus Bardisplays system status messages and any error message (associated with a field entry), in the far left corner. The KB elevation is displayed in the lower right corner of theStatus Bar.
The On-line Help is divided into four(4) main categories: Commands -Descriptions of each menu command withinPower*Log.Toolbar -Shortcuts to common commands are explained. Database Table Operations -Commands/functions related to the Database Table are described. Quick Reference Guide- The portion of theOn-line Help System, that quickly refers you tosome of the more commonly performed tasks.

This tutorial will guide you through the process of creating and editing a new striplog (hereafter referred to simply as a log), with curves and interpreted lithology. Connecting to the Database
1.)Double clickon thePower*LoIcon. Acknowledge the Security Information window byclickingon thebuttoninitiate the program and activate a. This will Connect Databasewindow.
2.)Highlight thepgeology access V5 (Microsoft Access Driver[*.mbd]))database byclickingon it once. 3.)Move your mouse pointer to theUser IDfield andclick. This will activate a flashing cursor in theUser IDfield.Typepgeologyin theUser IDfield.PresstheTabkey on the keyboard to move to thePasswordfield. 4.)Typepgeologyin thePasswordfield and thenclickon thebutton. The program will now load various dictionaries and then activate anOpen Logwindow. Creating a new Well / Log The first step in creating a new log is toclickon theNew Logbuttonon theToolbaror to selectNewunderFileon theSelection Bar. This will open theNew Logwindow (Figure 1-2on the next page). This more than likel will a ear after connectin to the Database without ou have to do the above procedure if this was the first time you have activated Power*Log.

1.)TheWell/Log Namefield is where you enter the name of the well (no more than 50 characters long).TypeTutorial Wellinto theWell / Log Namefield. 2.)Clickon thebuttonto activate theUWI Formatwindow.
3.)You will be using theDLS(Dominion Land Survey System) format (for Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and some of BC). Enter the following information into the empty DLSfields and remember toTabbetween fields. Loc. Ex.:00(two zeros) LSD:14 Sec.:32 Township:063 Range:23 E/W:W Mer.:5 O/A:0 Sequence:(zero) Event0(zero) 4.)ClickonOKwhen you have finished entering theUWI. An extendedUWIis created by Power*LogTMfrom the many small fields that you just filled in.

6.)Clickon V SYSTEM Geology Log [SYSTEM (M)]to highlight it and thenclickon the button.You may alsodouble clickon V SYSTEM Geology Log [SYSTEM (M)] . 7.)Once you have been returned to theNew Logwindow,double clickin theLog Start Depthfield. This will highlight the zero (0) and activate a flashing cursor.Type1190intheLog Start Depthfield. 8.)Once the information is entered,clickon thebutton. 9.)This will initiate aNew Log. During this process, the curves associated with the selected log format will be added.Drill Ratewill be the first Add curve window.

11.)Clickon thebuttonin theAdd Curvewindow forTotal Gas.This will activate well and its log layoutYou have just added two curves to the database that will be displayed as curve layers in the Drilling Progress track on the new Tutorial log showing the Tutorial Wells information. **When the log opens, it should resemble this log** .

13.)Fill in the information you feel is necessary (The well window shown above has been filled in to give you an idea of how to complete the fields) and thenclickon the buttonto save any changes you have made to the database. Note:Some of the fields in theEdit Wellwindow have character restrictions or mandator re uirements. Conse uentl , if an of these restrictions have been violated or if an re uirements have not been met, the offendin field will be hi hli hted. The nature of the roblem will be displayed on theStatus Bar(lower left corner of the screen), and you will be prompted with a system error message window. 14.)If the record has been successfully saved,selectthe with theShortcut Optionssystem window.

The System Options Window To activate the system Options windowclickon theOptions selection andon the menu toolbar thenselecttheSystems Optionsselection to activate the Systems Options window.
TheSystem Optionswindow is used to customizePower*Log / Power*Curvesystem settings to suit the needs of the user. Listed below are some of the more important system settings: Date FormatAllows the user to choose from several different- Types ofDate Formats. Monitor Heightthe height of the monitor (in inches), on which the log is- Used to determine going to be displayed on your monitor to an exact scale (Power*Log). Monitor Widthwidth of the monitor (in inches), on which the log is- Used to determine the going to be displayed on your monitor to an exact scale (Power*Curve). Rock Favorites- Allows the user to determine their ten (10) favoriteRock Typesand then displays them in a Toolbox menu generated by the activation of theRock Type Builderwindow in theInterpretive Lithologytrack. 1.)Clickon thebuttonin theSystem Optionswindow. 2.)Then,clickon thebuttonin the Rock Type Favorites list window to prepare it for the selection of your Rock Favorites. 3.)Now,selectthe followingRock Typesfrom theRock Type Favoriteslist window: Anhy (prim) [Anhydrite (primary)] Sh m gy [Shale medium gray] Ss [Sandstone] Plus any other 7 rock types you would use a lot.
