Population - Année 1984 - Volume 39 - Numéro 2 - Pages 364-367Tabutin Dominique. — Fertility and mortality in African censuses over the last 25 years. In this article the frequency and type of questions asked about fertility and mortality in 25 African censuses taken since 1956 are studied. An increase in so-called « indirect » questions is noted : total number of children born or surviving. However, since 1970, direct questions on births and deaths which has occurred during the previous twelve months have also been used. Increasingly, both types of questions are put. Although these is no shortage of techniques to process the information thus gathered, these have practically no « methodological results » i.e. observations which make it possible to validate these techniques. The results thus remain subject to uncertainties in most cases. 4 pages Source : Persée ; Ministère de la jeunesse, de l’éducation nationale et de la recherche, Direction de l’enseignement supérieur, Sous-direction des bibliothèques et de la documentation.
