1 926 000 personnes vivent en 1990 dans l 'outre-mer français dont les 3/4 dans les départements d'outre-mer. Les DOM, ce sont d'abord trois îles où le peuplement est d'autant plus dense qu'il se concentre sur le littoral, l'intérieur n'étant pas toujours très hospitalier. La fécondité y a fortement diminué cependant que l'exode vers la métropole s'est ralenti. Le quatrième DOM est un morceau de continent grand comme trois fois la Belgique, sous-peuplé, mais qui attire un flot croissant d'étrangers. L'activité féminine progresse, les comportements s'alignent sur ceux de la métropole, malgré des créations nettes d'emploi importantes, le taux de chômage augmente : il a un niveau trois fois plus élevé qu'en métropole et touche particulièrement les jeunes.
People of French Overseas Departments and Territories.
In 1990, 1 926 000 people were living in the French overseas departments and territories, 3/4 of which in the departments. The overseas departments are primarily three islands where population is dense and concentrated in the coast line areas, as the inside is not always very hospitable. Fertility has sharply decreased, while migration towards metropolitan France has slowed down. The fourth overseas department is a land three times as big as Belgium, underpopulated but attracting a growing flow of foreigners. Female activity is increasing and its patterns are becoming closer to those of metropolitan France. In spite of the creation of many new jobs, the unemployment rate is increasing: it is three times higher than in metropolitan France and it affects mainly young people.

In 1990, 1 926 000 people were living in the French overseas departments and territories, 3/4 of which in the departments. The
