Résumé ~~Une image stéréotypée : les « caractères moraux » des Sénoufo dans le discours colonial et post-colonial. ~~— Ce qui a le mieux survécu de la littérature ethnographique coloniale traitant des Sénoufo au nord de la Côte-d'Ivoire est son aspect le plus faible et idéologiquement le plus suspect : la description des « caractères intellectuels et moraux » du peuple en question. Ces considérations, absentes en tant que telles de la littérature d'exploration, ont été élaborées par Maurice Delafosse dans la première décade du xxe siècle et ont ensuite été constamment invoquées tout au long de la période coloniale. Paradoxalement, certains intellectuels sénoufos sont les héritiers directs de ce legs douteux. En examinant les différents avatars, coloniaux et post-coloniaux, du « caractère sénoufo », on peut retracer non seulement la formation d'un discours « ethnique » particulier, mais aussi sa récupération et enfin sa transformation.
Abstract The most enduring legacy of the colonial ethnographie literature on the Senufo of northern Côte-d'Ivoire has been its weakest and ideologically most suspect feature: descriptions of the caracteres intellectuels et moraux of the people in question. Such considerations, absent as such from the literature of exploration, were first elaborated by Maurice Delafosse in the first decade of the twentieth century and repeatedly invoked throughout the colonial period. Paradoxically, the direct heirs to this questionable legacy have been certain Senufo intellectuals. By examining the various avatars, colonial and postcolonial, of the Senufo character, we can trace not only the formation of a particular ethnic discourse but its recuperation and ultimately its transformation.
