Arebalo is Awarded Chiefs Commendation Support Services Technician Kel-ly Arebalo of the Atascadero Police Department was awarded the Chiefs Commendation on August 12th at the City Council Meet-ing. Kelly earned the honor by exem-plary performance in September of 2007, while serving as the tactical dispatcher for aeld operation in-volvingfteen agencies and over 200eld per-sonnel and supervisors. Teams were assigned many different locations in two counties and simultaneously executed war-rants for searches and arrests. Kelly had mini-mal knowledge of the plan but coordinated and tracked resources from the command center with her calm competent demeanor that was recog-nized and appreciated by all involved in the op-eration. Qualications for the Chiefs Commendation in-clude an act that brings credit to the Department and the member and is highly recognized by fel-low members and/or citizens as an outstanding accomplishment of police duty. Kelly was nomi-nated by a participant of the operation who stat-ed that she will be requested by name for future operations requiring extensive communications coordination. Kelly has been with the Atascadero Police Department since April of 1999.

City Council Recognizes Carden and Buck-Moyer for Parks and Recreation Commission Service The City of Atascadero has enjoyed some ex-pert advice from two Atascadero High stu-dents who have r e p r e s e n t e d the interests of young people on the Parks and Recreation C o m m i s s i o n since late 2005.Ryan Carden and Paige B u c k - M o y e rrelyJaMBeknneryoTMya,MiOromraylerMl,alCyBreua,demEllenorPro-T have served on,ndearCanRy,naLuGoegre the Commission to offer a youth perspective on a wide range of Commission business. The also were involved when the Colony Park Com-munity Cen-ter was being planned, and gave valu-able input on the facility. They served on Commis-sion sub-com-mittees and distinguished Jerry Clay, Tom OMally, Paige Buck-Moyer,t h e m s e l v e s GeorgeLunPar,o-MTeaymorEllMeinkeBeBrraeundnler,Mayoras thoughtful, hard working and dedicated individuals. The City Council recently thanked and commended both Mr. Carden and Ms. Buck-Moyer for their out-standing service. The Zoo team challenges you to make chang-es of your own at home and in your busi-nesses. By implementing just these simple ideas we have made a signi-cant difference. If the residents of Atascadero all made just a small ef-fort, we could be a leading community toward conservation and the green effort.

So, the Zoo team decided to make a change. We had several buckets donat-ed by helpful friends of the Zoo and dumped our old ways. Now, you might see zookeepers car-rying buckets of trash instead of trash bags. We will save an average of 4,000 trash bags ev-ery year from our local landthese buckets and saying no to trash bags.ll just by reusing “ CR tion Value (CRV). We were pleasantly programs...bringing in their CRV recycling from home, critical cons”ervationsurprised when Zoo staff members began but were even more excited to see so many other City staff members getting on board. The money that we get back from CRV recycling will go directly toward critical conservation programs as our way of giving support to other worth-while organizations. So, a huge thanks goes out to everyone that has supported this new project!
Visitors to the Zoo have already begun to comment on small changes in and around the Zoo. In an effort to do our part for water and energy conservation in California during this crucial time, we have made a few adjustments. Periodically, you may see that our front entrance pond is drained and the pump system is turned off, our Flamingo exhibit waterspout is turned off and our Serval waterfall is turned off. While this may not be as pleasing to the visitors, we felt that it was our responsi- bility to join in the effort. You may see other water features running, this is to ensure clean and fresh water to certain animals. So, next time you see a water feature turned off in an exhibit, dont be dis- a p p o i n t e d , be proud of the City of Atascadero, the Charles P a d d o c k Zoo, and yourself. By visiting the Zoo you have h e l p e d us to make a better effort toward conservation!

This extensive project will remove and replace the current wood poles, with a system of poles comprised of pre-cast concrete bases and steel pole shafts. This new pole system will increase the life span of the lighting system. The next step in the project will replace the existing lights with ef-cient less glaring lights. The Musco system will cut the spill of light by half, protecting the beauty of the dark night skies.

If you are able to attend the Day of the Oak event, you will learn the basics of na-tive tree planting and much more. Keep in mind that oak trees must be planted in suitable soils at locations that meet their growth re-quirements. Seedlings need shelter from the hot summer sun; however, too much shade can also be damaging. Most trees re-quire wire mesh devices to protect roots from gophers and other burrowing wild-life. Above-ground cages or seedling protectors are necessary until plants grow tall enough to discourage deer and cattle grazing. In-sect pests and weeds pres-ent further problems. Of course, planted trees need adequate water in therst year as they become estab-lished. It is always a good idea to mark the seedling locations and return peri-odically with water during therst year or two to en-sure success.
