This English-English Dictionary will completely fulfil the academic and writing requirements of students, aspirants of competitive examinations, researchers, scholars, translators, educationists, and writers. This dictionary is unique in the sense that the 'Words or Terms' have been drawn from literature, science, geography, commerce & business etc to give it a touch of completeness. 'Words or Terms' come complete with grammatical details, syntax, and meaning and a sentence to improve writing or speaking. 'Words or Terms' have been serialized in alphabetical order, i.e., A-Z for ease in making searches. To the extent possible, Terms used in common parlance have only been included, avoiding less frequent ones. In the Appendices section, body parts, common ailments, apparel, cereals, fruit & vegetables, herbs & spices, household items and other useful information have been included for added utility. A fairly good response received from readers to our previously published concise dictionaries on science, commerce and language subjects has encouraged us to undertake yet another publication commanding everlasting demand - An English-English Dictionary. Like earlier ones this is a pocket-type concise version. This edition is expected to fulfil the academic and writing requirements of students, researchers, scholars, translators, educationists, and writers. This dictionary is quite different from others in that the ‘Terms’ have been drawn from areas of universal usage - literature, science, geography, commerce & business etc. Terms used in common parlance, compound words, syntax and other grammatical details along with a sentence (in English) to improve writing have been given.
Terms have been serialized in Alphabetical order, i.e., A-Z for ease in making searches easy. Terms carry meaning in simple English. To the extent possible, Terms used in common parlance have been included, avoiding less frequent ones.
In the Appendices section, body parts, common ailments, apparel, foods, fruit & vegetables, herbs & spices, household items, professions, methods of transportation, birds & animals, family relations, musical instruments, jewels, prefixes & suffixes, weights & measures important conversion tables, Roman numerals, metaphors & similes, idioms & phrases have been included.
It is hoped that this dictionary will be found useful by student community besides others such as, educationists, writers, and translators.

How to use this Dictionary
Umpire - {noun) 1. In certain sports an official who watches a game or match closely to enforce the rules and arbitrate on matters arising from the play. Umpires play a significant part in a cricket match . 2. A person chosen to arbitrate between contending parties. Both parties agreed to have him act as umpire to arbitrate in their dispute, (verb) act as an umpire; act as umpire in a game or match. He is umpiring the match between class Xand XII. The Lead word (here Umpire is the lead word) is shown in dark bold lettering. A hyphen follows the lead word. Part of Speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adverb etc) of the lead word is shown in italic and duly enclosed within a bracket like this ( ). Core sense of the lead word comes next. To clarify the meaning of the lead word, a sentence is written. The sentence is shown in italic. After this, sub-sense of the lead word is shown (if the lead word has more than one meaning); followed by another sentence in italic. Similarly other meanings (sub-senses) and corresponding sentences follow. If the lead word comes under another Parts of Speech, then the new Part of Speech (noun, pronoun, verb etc as the case may be) is given. As before, it is in italic and within bracket ( ). As before, meaning and sentence formation is given along with subsenses. If there are other parts of speech also of the lead word, identical method - parts of speech, meaning, sentence, then sub-sense and sentences follows.

Abaction (adj.) - 1 A large herd of cattle was stolen. Police have registered a case of abaction.
Abandon - (verb) 1 give up (an action or practice) completely. 2 desert or leave permanently. We abandoned the old car in an empty parking lot. 3 (abandon oneself to) indulge in (a desire or impulse) without restraint. She danced with abandon, [as adjective abandoned] unrestrained; uninhibited: a wild, abandoned dance. Noun lack of inhibition or restraint.
Abase - (verb) belittle or degrade. He was angry with his friend and abased him in public.
Abash - (verb) cause to feel embarrassed, disconcerted, or ashamed. His father abashed him by criticizing him before his friends.
Abashment - (noun) felt feeling embarrassed due to modesty. I felt abashment as it was my first time to perform on stage.
Abba - (noun) 1 [in the New Testament] God as father. Abba will certainly listen to our prayers. 2 [in the Syrian Orthodox and Coptic Churches] a title given to bishops and patriarchs. He was given the honored title of Abba.
Abbess - (noun) a woman who is the head of an abbey of nouns. He wanted the abbess to hear his confession.
Abbey - (noun) an establishment occupied by a community of monks or nuns. Once, there was an abbey here, now the building is dilapidated and deserted.
Abbot - (noun) a man who is the head of an abbey of monks. The abbot here very popular, he listen to the grievances of all people.
Abbreviate - (verb) shorten (a word, phrase, or text). Etc. is an abbreviated form of etcetera.
Abdomen - (noun) the part of the body containing the digestive and reproductive organs; the belly. [Zoology] the hinder part of the body of an arthropod. His abdomen is flat because he does a lot of exercise.
Abdominal - (adj.) of or relating to or near the abdomen. We took our brother to doctor as he complained of severe abdominal pain.
Abduce - (verb) to draw or take away. The problem was big but he soon abduced the conclusion.
Abduct - (verb) 1 take (someone) away illegally by force or deception. Ashok’s son has been abducted. The police are investing the case. 2 [Physiology] (of a muscle) move (a limb or part) away from the midline of the body or from another part. The opposite of Adduct.
Abduction - (noun) the action of forcibly taking someone away against their will. Abduction of children has increased and the police have become active.
Abecedarian - (noun) a novice learning the rudiments of some subject. He is an abecedarian learning the basics of computer.
Abed - (adv.) [archaic] in bed. He was so tired that he went abed at once and slept.
Abberrance - (noun) a state or condition markedly different from norm. Aberrance from the right path usually occurs in young age.
Abet - (verb) [abetted, abetting] encourage or assist (someone) to do something wrong, in particular to commit a crime. He doesn’t want to abet a crime.
Abhor - (verb) (abhorred, abhorring) detest; hate. I abhor scenes of crime and violence.
Abide - (verb) 1 [abide by] accept act in accordance with (a rule or decision). We must abide by the rules of traffic. 2 [of a feeling or memory] endure. I shall abide by the memories of my childhood. 4 [archaic] live; dwell
