There is every gradation between black and white in the picture, so blended to gether and so broken up into small frag ments that it is difficult to say Here is a patch of full black, here a dark tone, here a light tone, and here full light or white. So to simplify matters I put before you an exceedingly simple sub ject in which only four tones occur, and there are good, broad patches of each of them.
