Description

The captivating landscapes of America's heartland offer an inviting escape from the everyday in Indiana Across the Land. Although a road trip from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Ohio River could be accomplished in only six hours, photographers Lee Mandrell and DeeDee Niederhouse-Mandrell take readers the long way around the Hoosier state, embarking on a breathtaking journey across the seasons, down windswept dunes, through old-growth forests, over burbling creeks and yawning chasms, past icy lighthouses and worn-down barns, and into the southern cypress swamps. More than 140 photographs capture the beauty of the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore, Ouabache State Park, Turkey Run State Park, Squire Boone Caverns, and many other landmarks and natural wonders, both well-known and rarely glimpsed.

FOREWORD
Welcome to a state full of surprises and never at rest. A land where wooden covered bridges stretch serenely across rushing waters, tumbling and frothing, always eager to be elsewhere. Where perfectly symmetrical curves of cloud and roofline push ancient red barn silhouettes far up into the blue early morning sky. Where crowded fields of jostling, late summer sunflowers slowly but inexorably give way to dangling, rigid formations of blue-fire icicles lined up to catch the first rays of pale, hard January sunrises.
Welcome to Indiana. As the Hoosier state gracefully embraces its third century, it s an ideal time to sit back and savor the natural and manmade wonders that make Indiana so special. There are no better guides to take us along that dappled forest path of reflection than Lee Mandrell and DeeDee Niederhouse-Mandrell.
In these pages, the Mandrells invite us to see the Hoosier landscape in an insightful and delightfully imaginative way. The Mandrells Indiana stirs with form, texture, and color, all in motion and constantly spilling over one another. The deep red of a set of checkers and the crimson of the Bean Blossom Covered Bridge are pulses of color in very different black-and-white worlds; tree limbs and roots twist and turn as they gyrate across sky and limestone, above and below; the brilliance of a mid-summer rainbow still smolders in the fiery colors of autumn forests.
So, dive into these gorgeous photographs and be prepared to see the Hoosier state in some new ways. City blocks and ledges, beaches and cornfields, deep snow and scorching sun, all come together unforgettably through the discerning, appreciative eyes of the Mandrells in Indiana Across the Land .

Thanks to all of the people that live in the great state of Indiana. We have worked with some class acts that allowed us to get some of the photos included in this book. We appreciate their help more than any of them know. We hope everyone enjoys the results of our efforts.
