1. Keep Smiling
“You’ll find that life is still worthwhile, if you just smile.”
— Charlie Chaplin
Smiling is a natural phenomenon, it happens without much thought. When you are greeted with a smile you can’t help but smile back. Smiling has tremendous power and can uplift moods in minutes! But we often forget about this powerful gesture, as we get preoccupied with various aspects of our day-to-day lives. You’d be surprised to see that by choosing to smile there are happy changes occurring within and around you. The journey of a doctoral student can be overwhelming but you must remember to smile.
Smiling releases positive energy and diminishes negativity, which boosts your productivity. Studies have proven that smiling motivates people and enhances creativity. Working on a research paper can be tedious and often frustrating. My advice to you is pause for a moment and smile. You will see a visible change in yourself -- not only do you feel relaxed but also encouraged to work.
You must practice smiling every day—to yourself and at people you meet. Share your smile with people and feel the happiness grow inside. The more you share, the more you gain. Smiling has the power to uplift your mood and reduce stress. Whenever you are in a challenging situation, forcing a smile can reduce your anxiety considerably.
A genuine smile increases the trust of the recipient towards you. The bigger the smile, the more trustworthy you appear. As future educators and researchers, it is important that people know that they can trust you. Nobody wants to approach or work with someone with a frown, but are naturally drawn to people who are smiling. Given a choice between two equally qualified aspirants for a research position or a job, the candidate who carries a smile is often considered as a team player and someone who is easier to work with. It is one of the best and basic soft skills an individual must possess in order to be successful.
We all know how to smile but quite often it is a mere show of teeth. We need to become better at smiling. You have to learn to truly smile, not only with your teeth but with your eyes as well. My advice to you is to become observant—make a conscious effort to look out for great smiles and emulate them! Learn how people smile from their heart and express through their eyes and mouth.
On the journey called Life, there will be many hurdles and shortcomings but what is important is that you face it with a smile! As Phyllis Diller rightly points out, “Smile is a curve that sets everything straight.” So, Keep Smiling!

2. Process is The Product
“If the path be beautiful, let us not ask where it leads.”
— Anatole France
There is an emergent trend in the educational domain across the globe. Parents, students and even educators are beginning to fall prey to this epidemic. Everybody is obsessed about end results or reaching a goal—to finish college, to be rich and so on. For most people, this goal or result is the end product. But is that truly it? As a graduate student, is the 250+ pages dissertation your product? NO, it is not!
Although the end result is important, it is not the product. Then what is? The entire process of achieving that goal is your Product. The hardbound book that you penned is not your product. But, the hard work, the mistakes and all the learning you underwent while you wrote it, is. The process is the artifact ofyour learning and intellectual evolution. The transformation of a graduate student into a doctoral scholar on the path to scholar practitioner is the product.
There are different aspects of this process. As graduate students, it is imperative that you understand and imbibe them. Don’t worry about the results too much; instead focus on experiencing the process. In order to be a good researcher, you must engage with the rigorous and demanding process.
In order to learn what research is you have to learn what it is not. Research is not a catchword to gain someone’s attention. It is an intensive learning process where you systematically address and solve potential problems. Research is the process of articulating a problem effectively and then offering potential solutions to these problems.
Answer to most solutions is more questions, which is okay. Your answer is
