Description

If you have not seen the massive differences of interpretation between the premillennial understanding of Scripture versus the amillennial, we will clearly view both positions side by side, with their supporting quotes from some of their stalwarts. We will set forth different approaches to Scripture as we study the Book of Revelation, and these are not some minor issues. So much of how one interprets Scripture ties in with those views.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four footed animals and crawling creatures.
Therefore, God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.
For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie [ literally, the lie ] and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

BOOK DEDICATION

N ormally we end up dedicating the book to someone or a group of people. As I more and more hand Glory Books over to beloved people, I wanted to thank you all who had any part in this-big, small, or just prayed or encouraged one way or another.
I tell people quite often to Walk with God, and you will not miss His will. You may not understand it for a while, but you will not miss God s Will.
Glory Books is one of those. I bucked, kicked, dragged my fingers on the sidewalk-so to speak-and nevertheless, here we are. I ll wait and let God show you some of the things He did and how He used this association that He had put together.
I think it would surprise you. It certainly surprised me.
God bless you all,
Greg Harris June 2021

INTRODUCTION AND BRIEF EXPLANATION

S ince my diagnosis of a terminal disease, and major side effects of some very strong medicine that I am on, I have not been racing wildly, but I certainly have tried to redeem the time, purposefully considering the situation. Until recently, things were fine, and it was a very productive segment of time for me. As I was preparing and writing a bit of The Lie-And Other Biblical Truths About the Coming Tribulation , godly friends intervened and told me it was time to stop writing; that the standard of writing had dropped considerably.
I had made peace with that and was looking for something to do, because I had spent virtually every day of the past 5 to 6 years, including this Introduction in mid 2021, writing in some way. I was looking for something the Lord would have me do, but I was not sure what to do.
I was informed by a close friend who knew the situation very well, that some of my journal articles, already edited and published, would make up between 85 to 90 of what I had planned to include in The Lie . Of course, using different journal articles to cover the material meant that not everything would be in perfect order, and that one journal article might contain four or five different items from the same biblical chapter. I tried to have very little overlap, but some of it could not be helped.
So, under my no other option than use the journal articles to produce this book by how I just described, I am only using materials from previously published journal articles, including their footnotes. Special thanks to Dallas Theological Seminary for permission to reprint my journal articles in Bibliotheca Sacra (the name of their periodical journal), and thanks to The Master s Seminary for allowing me to use some of the articles I published with their journal, entitled the Master s Seminary Journal .
A few final points to note: first, just for clarity s sake, in the Table of Contents we have put in only the chapters names (which are actually the titles for the individual journal articles). I think you will see how much easier they are to read. Second, the full bibliographic entries will be on the first page and the end of the book. Third, I purposely wrote my journal articles to meet the academic standard, but also-and this is important to know-I wrote them for people in the church to read. So, do not let the concept of journal articles discourage you from reading this book. There may be a few words or contents that need explaining, but I tried to do that whenever I wrote.
And who knows, maybe that was one reason God wanted The Lie to be written.

CHAPTER 1
SATAN S WORK AS A DECEIVER

Gregory H. Harris
T he Bible presents Satan as playing a strategic role in deceiving people so that they either do not receive or do not retain the truth of God. By deceptive tactics Satan continually attempts to hinder God s program. Deception is an essential element of Satan s nature, for Jesus said he is a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies (John 8:44). Lying is one of his basic means of deceiving others.
The apostle John wrote of the great dragon . . . the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world (Rev. 12:9). The word deceives renders a present active participle ( ) , which speaks of deception that is a continuous action which has become . . . habitual. 1 Satan is involved in much more than random occurrences; he deceives because it is part of his personality to do so.
Two Old Testament accounts depict Satan s use of deception to accomplish his goals. 2 Of utmost importance is the account of the fall of man. Although the word deception is not specifically used in Genesis 3, Paul twice identified Satan s role in the Garden of Eden as deception. In 2 Corinthians 11:3 he wrote, But I am afraid, lest as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds should be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ. And in 1 Timothy 2:14 Paul wrote that it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being quite deceived, fell into transgression. In both verses Paul used an intensified form of the verb deceive ( , rather than ) . 3
The other significant Old Testament reference depicting Satan as a deceiver is more enigmatic. First Chronicles 21:1 states that Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel. Although again the specific word deception is not used here, deception is evident in that Satan targeted David to lead him into sin, and David and Israel suffered the consequences of his actions. The parallel account in 2 Samuel 24 shows the seriousness of this transgression and the subsequent punishment inflicted on David and the nation. This account shows Satan may work behind the scenes in ways not discernible by human means. No one would have known of Satan s role in this incident unless God revealed it.
In explaining the parable of the tares sown among the wheat, Jesus said the enemy who sowed them is the devil (Matt. 13:39). This account reveals that Satan currently engages in acts of deception that will continue until the end of the a
