EMERGENCY!
Earthquake, flood, fire, hurricane, famine, disease, war… Each year, disasters kill around 75,000 people and affect nearly 200 million more, including 60 million children. People are driven from their homes, lose theirlivelihoodsor loved ones, and suffer injury andtraumaas a result of disasters. Luckily, those affected by terrible events do not have to struggle alone. Hundreds of charities, large and small, are quick to help in emergencies.

Helping hands Charity workers are often amongst the first on the scene of a disaster, along with the emergency services. They offer a crucial lifeline to the people caught up in the event. The work of charities starts in the hours after a disaster and may continue for months or even years afterwards, as people face the challenge to rebuild their lives and communities. The people who work for charities are driven by compassionand an urgent desire to help their fellow human beings.
Some charities work at the “sharp end”, helping people in situations who may be fighting for their lives. Others work behind the scenes, organizing care and supplies or raising the money needed to fund the charity’s work. They range from volunteers to senior professionals.
Short- and long-term help Relief workis urgent action responding to emergency situations. It includes rescuing people from danger and giving immediate assistance – medical care, food, shelter, water, and essential supplies.
Development work is longer-term help to buildsustainable, successful communities. It includes education, developing economies and livelihoods, and reducing poverty and long-termfood insecurity.
What can happen? There are around 300 500 disasters each year. Experts divide them into natural and man made disasters, and further divide these into situations that come on suddenly and those that develop more slowly.
Types of disaster
Sudden onset
Slow onset
Natural earthquake, hurricane/ tornado volcanic eruption storms/floods/tsunami famine drought diseaseepidemic
Man made war terrorist attack industrial accident transport accident refugeecrisis political crisis
Not all emergencies are large scale disasters. There are also small scale emergencies such as people being lost at sea or in the mountains and deserts, for example.
