Insights from Chapter 1

#1

The part of us that creates is childlike. It is filled with awe, alert to new experiences, and mesmerized by the sensory wonders of our environment. For adults, this often leads to impatience or pressure to learn something quickly.

#2

It is important to be gentle with yourself, especially in the early days of a transition. As you answer simple questions to build your memoir, you will begin to discover new interests, desires, and direction.

#3

When we are children, we are naturally open to exploration. Our early memories are specific, and we often find there are clues there to our true passions if we are willing to search for them.

#4

To help you remember important events in your life, divide your age by twelve. This is the number of years you will cover each week in your memoir exploration. You can expand on any memory that evokes emotion, or create another memory that is inspired by the first.

#5

During the Childhood stage, you should focus on your childhood memories. What were your favorite toys. What was your favorite book. What was your favorite food.

#6

When we say it is too late to start something, what we are really saying is that we are not willing to be a beginner. But when we are willing to dip our toe in, even just a little, we are rewarded with a sense of youthful wonder.

#7

The fear of age is a major obstacle for many people who want to start a new activity. But it is rarely an actual obstacle to exploring the desired activity. We are always the same age inside.

#8

It’s never too late to start something new. We have learned patience, and we are able to see the long game. We are able to identify expertise and seek out those who can help us find efficient routes to our goals.

#9

The Censor is the internal voice that tells us we are not doing well and that we could do better. It attacks us from out of the blue and its voice has a damning certainty. We must recognize that the Censor’s negative voice is not the voice of reason.

#10

The Censor is a negative inner voice that is typically sarcastic. It pokes fun at our ideas and encourages us to give up. The Censor speaks in a schoolyard bully tone and often uses simplistic reasoning.

#11

We cannot eliminate our Censor, but we can learn to avoid it. When we are faced with an idea that we don’t like, we can ignore it and continue with the project, or we can listen to our Censor and give in to its negativity.

#12

The Censor is a jerk, and we should not be afraid of him or her. We should instead learn to outsmart them by taking actions on our own behalf that defy their predictions.

#13

Skepticism is a common obstacle that can be overcome by asking for guidance. It can come from within us, in the form of doubts or concerns about our own abilities, or it can come from outside, in the form of societal beliefs that only a select few are creative.

#14

It is important to seek out those who will encourage your baby steps in the early days of retirement. Like the youngster discovering his world for the first time, you are free to play and daydream.

#15

After many years of practicing law, Harry was ready for retirement. But he found himself unable to get started on any of his many intended projects. He was afraid of missing out on opportunities, and he began to feel pessimistic.

#16

Skepticism is rooted in fear, and fear is healed by compassion. Being gentle with ourselves helps us move through our vulnerability and toward our dreams. A little active kindness toward ourselves can take us a very long way.

#17

You will likely experience synchronicity, or a sudden insight that may seem out of nowhere as you work with these tools. What ahas did you discover this week.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The next phase of your life, which you will revisit in your memoir, is focused on your early school-age self and involves memories of newly gained independence. Remembering the simplest aspects of independence, such as your first day of school or your first night away from home, will bring back memories that are strangely close to the experience of rediscovering your independence in retirement.

#2

The Artist Date is a powerful tool that can help you discover new things about yourself. It is a solo experience that allows you to explore a location or activity that you may have visited many times in groups, but never alone.

#3

Small steps lead to larger ones. And the next step is always within your grasp. You may paint a room, reupholster a chair, purchase a new table for your kitchen, or find yourself window-shopping through a catalog and buying yourself new sheets and a lovely scarf.

#4

It is all too easy to put too much pressure on ourselves and criticize how we use our time. We rush from one thing to another, and we call ourselves lazy when we waste time doing nothing. We don’t have enough time or we have too much.
