A sentence can have either anactive verbor apassive verb.
Grade 6
This is calledvoice’.In a sentence with anactiveverb, thesubjectis doing the action. This is called theactive voice. The tall boy threw the ball.[the tall boy (subject) is doing the action (throwing)] *if the subject tells me who did the action, it is active* To find out the subject of the sentence, ask yourself: Who threw the ball? (Who/what did the action?)
STRUCTURE OF ACTIVE VOICE:
subject + verb + object
In a sentence with apassiveverb, the subject is being acted on. This is called thepassive voice. The ball was thrown.[the ball (subject) is being acted on (being thrown)] *if the subject tells me who the action was done to, it is passive* To find out the subject of the sentence, ask yourself: What was thrown? (Who/what had the
action done to them/it?)

When changing a sentence from active voice to passive voice, remember to change the
following:
1.Exchange the places of the subject and the object.
AV:
PV:
Sheboughta new car.
A new carwas bought byher.
Subject: She
Object: a new car
2.Correct the tense and form of the verb and the auxiliary verb.
AV:
PV:
Sheboughta new car.
A new carwas boughtby her.
3.Use the word‘by’before the subject in the passive voice. AV:Shebought a new car.
PV:
A new car was boughtby her.
