The American army was being reorganised and new generals were being put in charge. The Allies were back on the offensive, and by May 13, what was left of Rommel’s Afrika Korps was defeated and 238,000 Germans and Italians were taken prisoner.

On July 3, Britt stood in a scorching olive grove in Tunisia. He gathered with officers from the 3rd Division, and addressed them. We are on the eve of a great adventure. We are about to set forth upon the greatest amphibious expedition the world has ever known. . We find ourselves anticipating success or. failure. No, instead we anticipate success, or success beyond our utmost expectations. We do not know the word ‘failure.

On July 10, 1943, the first wave of the Allied liberation of Europe landed on the southern coast of Sicily. Private Audie Murphy was part of the invasion, and he was terrified. He saw his first dead American soldier, blown apart by shrapnel.

The invasion of Sicily was a complete anticlimax for Murphy. He had expected so much more excitement than what he experienced. The landing was perfectly timed, and thanks to a plethora of photographs and intelligence reports, Britt almost felt as if he’d visited Licata before.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Murphy was too young to join the army, so he tried to join the marines. They rejected him because he was too small and thin. He ended up in the 3rd Division as a replacement.

The first town to be liberated by the 15th Infantry Regiment was Licata, and Murphy was assigned to work as a runner for the commander of B Company, Captain Keith Ware. Ware did not look cut out for killing, but he had an inner strength forged by loss and hardship.

As Audie Murphy moved ahead on a scouting patrol that afternoon, he spotted two enemy officers trying to escape on white horses. He raised his carbine and toppled both in quick succession with deadly accuracy. He felt no guilt at taking his first lives.

The sun set as the dust clouds from the trucks began to settle. Truscott and Patton met on July 14 to discuss strategy, and Patton ordered Truscott to get his entire division to Sicily’s capital as fast as possible.

The first major city in Europe to be liberated from German occupation was Palermo, and the Americans were not allowed to enter it until General Truscott arrived to greet them. Patton looked delighted.

On July 26, radio broadcasts from Rome announced that Mussolini had been arrested. The war in Sicily was over. The 7th Army had occupied more than half of Sicily. Montgomery’s 8th Army was making slow progress, in the lee of Mount Etna.

The road to Messina wound along a beautiful coastline, through lemon groves. It was skirted by bushes of white oleander and pink bougainvillea.
