Marriage is a divine institution. It was created for the lifelong help and comfort that husband and wife should give to each other. It exists for the well-being of family life so that children, who are gifts from God, might be brought up in the instruction of the Lord.

#6

The commitment to monogamy is not difficult to make in an environment rife with sexually transmitted diseases. However, when it comes to the benefits of marriage, such as the sharing of spiritual understanding, the pleasure of putting each other first, and the security that comes from being committed to one another, the commitment must be total and wholehearted.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

You are in the single world, which is full of opportunities and fraught with dangers. You know that the decisions you make today will contribute to the person you will be tomorrow. You want to have a clear strategy for relationships that will prevent you from making unwise decisions and living with regret.

#2

We must make sure that our relationship with God comes first. We must also recognize that our significance and fulfillment in life is not determined by whether or not we have a relationship with someone of the opposite sex.

#3

The decision about whether to marry and whom to marry is as crucial as any other decision we will make. When we consider the desire to avoid marital failure, is it fair to say that one way to do so is to opt for singleness.

#4

Paul’s teaching on marriage is that it should not be used as an excuse for slackness in the service of the Lord. The list of priorities is usually given as follows: husband, wife, family, work, but Paul says that marriage should not reduce the Christian’s obligation to the Lord and His work.
