Sample Book Insights:
#1 We must ask ourselves why we are being educated. Is it only to pass some examinations and get a job. Or is it the function of education to prepare us for the whole process of life. We must understand that life is not just a job, an occupation.
#2 Education is meant to help you understand the vast expanse of life with all its subtleties, its beauty, and its sorrows and joys. But education can only do this if it is free of fear. Otherwise, it will never help you discover what is real and what is true.
#3 The world is caught up in endless wars, and it is guided by politicians who are always seeking power. The function of education is to give you freedom, not just to conform to the social order.
#4 The world is in chaos, and it is up to each individual to respond to that by finding a solution. If you respond as a Hindu or a Buddhist, a Christian or a communist, your response is very limited. You can only solve the problem if you are not afraid of losing your security.

Insights from Chapter 1

#1

We must ask ourselves why we are being educated. Is it only to pass some examinations and get a job. Or is it the function of education to prepare us for the whole process of life. We must understand that life is not just a job, an occupation.

#2

Education is meant to help you understand the vast expanse of life with all its subtleties, its beauty, and its sorrows and joys. But education can only do this if it is free of fear. Otherwise, it will never help you discover what is real and what is true.

#3

The world is caught up in endless wars, and it is guided by politicians who are always seeking power. The function of education is to give you freedom, not just to conform to the social order.

#4

The world is in chaos, and it is up to each individual to respond to that by finding a solution. If you respond as a Hindu or a Buddhist, a Christian or a communist, your response is very limited. You can only solve the problem if you are not afraid of losing your security.

#5

When you are in a state of revolt, struggling to understand what it means to learn and love, you do not ask if it is one process or three. When you are in a state of learning, you are learning throughout your life, and there is no one special teacher.

#6

The questioner wanted to know if it was possible to create a school like this without government help. He noted that education is being controlled by governments around the world, and asked if it was possible to create a school without government aid.

#7

If you want to create a new world, you must be willing to give your heart to it regardless of governments and society’s dictates. If you and I feel vitally that a new world can be brought into being, when each one of us is in revolt inwardly, psychologically, and spiritually, then we will create it.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

The problem of freedom is a very complex one, and it requires deep study and understanding. Freedom means being free from fear and compulsion, and not being ruled by your desires. It comes from understanding your entire environment and becoming free from the various influences that constantly close in on you.

#2

The function of education is to help you not to imitate anyone, but to be yourself all the time. This is a difficult thing to do, as you think that what you are is ignoble, and that if you could only change what you are into something noble, it would be wonderful. But that never happens.

#3

Intelligence is not knowledge. It is a mind that is not satisfied with explanations or conclusions, but rather wants to learn and study. It comes into existence when you understand the entire process of the mind, not just your own mind.

#4

If you try to become intelligent, you will only become more stupid. But if you understand and see your stupidity for what it is, you can begin to break it up.

#5

The child will find out about himself if the environment in which he lives allows him to do so. If the parents and teachers are genuinely concerned that the young person should discover what he is, they will not force him into anything.

#6

It is important that those who are dealing with children not impose upon them their own fallacies, their own notions about ghosts, and their own particular ideas and experiences.
Insights from Chapter 3

#1

There is no such thing as freedom today. We would like to be free, but everyone, from the teacher to the politician, is doing something in their own little corner to prevent that freedom. To be free is not just to do what you like, but to understand the whole problem of dependence.

#2

To be free, we must revolt against all inward dependence, and we cannot revolt if we don’t understand why we are dependent.
