#1

Insight meditation is the practice of seeing clearly our bodies, hearts, minds, and the world around us. It is the heart and essence of the Buddha’s teachings, and it can open us to see clearly and develop a wise and compassionate way of relating to and understanding our lives.

#2

The path of awakening begins with right understanding, which asks us to consider what we really value most in this life. We can look around us and see the suffering in the world, as well as our own. We can then ask ourselves what we value most deeply, and use that as the basis of our spiritual practice.

#3

The law of karma is the second pillar of understanding the world. It refers to the fact that what we do and how we act create our future experiences. We can train ourselves to be more loving and aware.

#4

What is meditation. It is a good question. There are hundreds of schools of meditation, which include prayer, reflection, devotion, visualization, and myriad ways to calm and focus the mind. Insight meditation is particularly directed towards bringing understanding to the mind and heart.

#5

The first precept is to refrain from killing. It means honoring all life, not acting out of hatred or aversion in such a way as to cause harm to any living creature. We work to develop a reverence and caring for life in all its forms.

#6

The second precept is about not stealing. It means not taking what is not ours. We need to let go of being greedy and not take too much. We should use things with sensitivity and care, and develop our sense of sharing this life, this planet.

#7

The fourth precept is to refrain from false speech. It asks us to be aware of how we use the energy of our words. When we speak what is true and helpful, people are attracted to us. To be mindful and honest makes our minds quieter and more open, our hearts happier and more peaceful.

#8

To enter the human realm, to establish a ground for spiritual life, requires that we bring awareness to all the actions in our world, from our use of intoxicants to our speech.

#9

The first aspect of the path, conscious conduct, leads to the second aspect, which is the development of samadhi, or concentration and steadiness of mind. It means collecting the mind or bringing together the mind and body, focusing one’s attention on one’s experience in the present moment.

#10

The third aspect of the Buddha’s path of awakening is clarity of vision and the development of wisdom. We can develop wisdom by directly observing the truth of our experience. We learn as we are able to live fully in the present moment, rather than being lost in the dreams, plans, memories, and commentaries of the thinking mind.

#11

Insight meditation is a path of discovery. It is straightforward and direct, with no frills or gimmicks. It is simple, though not easy. It involves establishing a foundation of harmonious action, collecting and concentrating the mind and body, and seeing the laws of life by our own true, careful, and direct observation.

#12

Choose one or more of the five basic training precepts and practice it for a week. Then examine the results and choose another precept for a subsequent week. Refraining from killing, stealing, false speech, sexual misconduct, and intoxicants is a good example.

#13

As we meditate, we begin to open our senses and our bodies. We begin to experience the accumulated tensions, knots, and holdings that are present, and as we become more inwardly silent, we become more aware of these painful feelings.

#14

We must be willing to feel the pain that comes with opening up. We must also be willing to feel the fear that comes with opening up, as well as the self-pity that comes with it.

#15

We must allow ourselves to be more relaxed and open, and the possibility of seeing more clearly what is going on arises. When we resist painful feelings, we have the idea that there is some solid mass of pain in a part of the body. But when we allow ourselves to feel the sensations that are there, we begin to see that pain is not a solid mass but rather a field of vibration.

#16

Through the power of mindfulness, we can come to a place of balance and rest. Mindfulness is a quality of attention that notices without choosing or preferring. It is a choiceless awareness that shines on all things equally.

#17

To find the rhythm of meditation, it takes effort to pay attention and bring the mind into each moment. In every moment of mindfulness, there is no reactivity in the mind, no clinging and no condemning.

#18

The third aspect of meditation is to investigate or reveal what is hidden. What is hidden is the true nature of our experience. We confuse our ideas about things with the experience itself. We must go from the level of concept to the level of direct experience.

#19

We begin to see the impermanence of things, and we understand the truth of the basic insecurity about all phenomena. We see that everything is in a state of flux, and we begin to let go and allow for the inevitable flow of change.

#20

Right effort and right aim are the two qualities that underlie all meditation development. If we make the effort to aim our minds correctly, then mindfulness, concentration, calm, equanimity, wisdom, and compassion will follow.

#21

When you meditate, try to go from the level of concept to the level of direct experience. When you walk, what are you aware of in each step. Is there an image of the form of the foot or leg. Can you feel the different sensations in the movement.
