Insights from Chapter 1
#1
The case of Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford highlighted the issue of male privilege and the toll it takes on girls and women. Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court nominee, was confirmed despite credible evidence that he had sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl.
#2
Many of the naysayers were women, and included other senators, journalists, and laypeople.
#3
Misogyny is the act of hating women, and it is typically the response of men to women’s violations of gendered norms and expectations. sexism is the theoretical and ideological branch of patriarchy, which serves to naturalize and rationalize gendered norms and expectations.
#4
Misogyny is best understood as a property of the social environments girls and women navigate, wherein they are liable to be subject to hateful or hostile treatment because of their gender.
#5
Entitled addresses the ways in which misogyny, himpathy, and male entitlement work together to produce unjust, perverse, and sometimes bizarre outcomes. Women are often unfairly deprived of their genuine entitlement to both feminine-coded and masculine-coded goods, which leads to inequalities that range from a woman not receiving adequate care for her pain to her not being able to take up traditionally male positions of power.
#6
The underlying logic of these and other moral biases is what I aim to expose and dismantle in this book. I want to address the ways in which women are punished and blamed for daring to speak out about the reality of the problem.
