#1 The goal of burlesque parties is to look fuckable. At such parties, students are often completely shitfaced.
#2 The first step in hooking up is to get shitfaced. Party-oriented students believe that drinking enhances their experience. They believe that alcohol improves their personality, and that getting drunk brings out their intoxicated self, which is freer and more fun to be around.
#3 At Central Michigan University, some students admitted that they pretended to drink and were even bullied for not doing so. The study even documented how non-drinkers were treated at parties.
#4 At college parties, women are expected to grind with any male that will have them. Men watch their female classmates mimic heterosexual grinding, but this is often accompanied by jokes and laughing with each other.

#1

The goal of burlesque parties is to look fuckable. At such parties, students are often completely shitfaced.

#2

The first step in hooking up is to get shitfaced. Party-oriented students believe that drinking enhances their experience. They believe that alcohol improves their personality, and that getting drunk brings out their intoxicated self, which is freer and more fun to be around.

#3

At Central Michigan University, some students admitted that they pretended to drink and were even bullied for not doing so. The study even documented how non-drinkers were treated at parties.

#4

At college parties, women are expected to grind with any male that will have them. Men watch their female classmates mimic heterosexual grinding, but this is often accompanied by jokes and laughing with each other.

#5

Hooking up in college is all about hooking up with the right person. To be considered attractive, a person must be hot. Bragging about sexual exploits is traditionally the purview of men, but women use this to bond with one another.

#6

In hookup culture, bodies are not only judged by attractiveness, but also by athletic prowess, fraternity membership, and social status. Students form a working consensus about who is hookup-worthy, and that guides their decisions.

#7

Students who are collectively considered unhot are sexual hot potatoes. They fear being burned by hooking up with someone widely considered unattractive. Thus, they often plan ahead and make sure they are seen dancing with the right person.

#8

The classic move to establish that you want to hook up with someone is to turn around to face him, rather than dance with your back pressed against his front. This is why women look to their friends when a guy approaches them from behind instead of taking a look for themselves.

#9

The word hookup is ambiguous. It can mean anything from kissing to consummating. The purpose of the hookup is the opposite of ambiguous. It is supposed to be specific and public.

#10

The fifth step is to establish that an intimate moment between you and someone wasn’t meaningful. This is a difficult personal and interpersonal task, because people have to choose. If the hookup is going to be meaningless, all of these implications have to be nullified.

#11

Students who hook up are almost always drunk or have at least been drinking. Sober sex is taken very seriously on college campuses, and some students believe it’s best to only hang out when drunk or on drugs.

#12

Because students are drunk, they can claim that there was no particular reason that they hooked up with each other instead of with someone else.
