Sample Book Insights:
#1 I began walking around the Chicago neighborhoods surrounding the university, which were predominantly African American. I didn’t see any crime, and I didn’t feel particularly threatened. I wondered why the university kept warning students to keep out of those areas.
#2 I was a student at the University of Chicago, and I was interested in the more scientific branch of sociology. I was not impressed by the lectures, so I went to see William Julius Wilson, the most eminent living scholar on the subject and the most prominent African American in the field of sociology.
#3 I was assigned to help with a study on how black youth are affected by specific neighborhood factors, such as growing up in a poor area. I had no idea how to interview anyone, so I went to the library to look over questionnaires.
#4 I would go running in Washington Park, which was one of Chicago’s stateliest parks. I would often stop by the lagoon in the middle of the park, where I would listen to the old black men play cards and fish. They would never trust a white man, and thought blacks were no better.

#1

I began walking around the Chicago neighborhoods surrounding the university, which were predominantly African American. I didn’t see any crime, and I didn’t feel particularly threatened. I wondered why the university kept warning students to keep out of those areas.

#2

I was a student at the University of Chicago, and I was interested in the more scientific branch of sociology. I was not impressed by the lectures, so I went to see William Julius Wilson, the most eminent living scholar on the subject and the most prominent African American in the field of sociology.

#3

I was assigned to help with a study on how black youth are affected by specific neighborhood factors, such as growing up in a poor area. I had no idea how to interview anyone, so I went to the library to look over questionnaires.

#4

I would go running in Washington Park, which was one of Chicago’s stateliest parks. I would often stop by the lagoon in the middle of the park, where I would listen to the old black men play cards and fish. They would never trust a white man, and thought blacks were no better.

#5

I began to realize how vastly different the perspectives of Old Time and his friends were from those of the sociologists.

#6

I went looking for young black men in Chicago’s Lake Park projects, one of the poorest neighborhoods. I was stared at by several young men as I walked around the area.

#7

I was trying to interview families in the building, but my new friend insisted that no one lived there. He told me that the building was uninhabited, so I couldn’t talk to anyone.

#8

I was in the right place, but the lobby was empty. I quickly skirted past another set of distressed mailboxes and passed through another dank lobby. The elevator was missing entirely, and the walls were covered in graffiti.

#9

I was trying to complete a survey about young people’s self-perceptions, when a group of teenagers began to insult me and my questionnaire. They thought I was an advance scout for a Mexican gang conducting reconnaissance for a drive-by attack.

#10

I was conducting a study on the lives of young black men, but when I tried to explain the project to the men living in the building, they were not interested. One man, J. T. , told me I shouldn’t be there if I didn’t know who they were.

#11

I met with some of the young men who were guarding the stairwell, and they told me stories about sex, drugs, and power. They explained that they were junior members of a broad-based gang that sold crack cocaine.

#12

I was with the gang members as they went out to fight the Mexican gang members. I was nervous, but tried to accept my fate. I was grateful when they said I could go to the bathroom.

#13

I was working with the gang members, and I was shocked by how thoughtful J. T. seemed to be. I wondered if he was invested in my success, or at least considered himself responsible for my safety.

#14

I went to the Lake Park projects to try and find J. T. and his gang. I was nervous, but the gang members were friendly with me and accepted the beer I gave them. They didn’t seem to be discussing anything important, though, they were just talking about what cars to get.

#15

I was talking to someone who had a unique perspective on life in a poor neighborhood. I was invited to join Bill Wilson’s team, and I was given the opportunity to get closer to the ground.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I began spending time with J. T. He would take me around the neighborhood, telling me about the history of black Chicago. He loved to talk about the gangs and the underground economy.

#2

I would often meet with J. T. to discuss gang life and the drug trade. I was too meek to ask for any kind of formalized arrangement, but J.
