Sample Book Insights:
#1 The 112th Congress was exciting and chaotic, and it was difficult to learn the ropes and rules of the house. But you must absolutely hit the ground running, as you must assemble a staff both in your home district and in Washington.
#2 I had established myself as an ideological leader within the conference, and I wanted Paul to sign a book for me. He had roadmaps for tax reform and economic growth, and he was someone many of the freshmen admired and respected.

#1

The 112th Congress was exciting and chaotic, and it was difficult to learn the ropes and rules of the house. But you must absolutely hit the ground running, as you must assemble a staff both in your home district and in Washington.

#2

I had established myself as an ideological leader within the conference, and I wanted Paul to sign a book for me. He had roadmaps for tax reform and economic growth, and he was someone many of the freshmen admired and respected.

#3

The 2010 freshman class included four Republicans from South Carolina: Jeff Duncan, Mick Mulvaney, me, and Tim Scott. We were dubbed the Four Horsemen. Tim made everything look easy, and he never seemed like a true freshman like the rest of us.

#4

The most important committees in the House are picked by the Steering Committee, which is made up of members of the House Steering Committee. The most coveted committees, such as Ways and Means, Energy and Commerce, and Appropriations, get people like Tim Scott.

#5

I was initially placed on the Small Business Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, but I later gave them up when I was selected by Speaker Boehner for the House Rules Committee. The House Rules Committee determines the order of business in the House, and how bills will be brought to the floor.

#6

I had never met Trey Gowdy before we were elected to Congress, but I instantly liked him. He was sharp, clear, and articulate, and he had a special gift for cross-examination.

#7

When you’re new to Washington, the most desirable position is in the eye of the media. Tim had daily opportunities for TV appearances, while I, on the other hand, was one of the least known members of our class. I had never served in the South Carolina state legislature.

#8

I knew I had to watch out for Tim Scott, the new hero of the Republican party, as he entered town with me. He seemed to break all the clichés and conventions of chasing the spotlight.

#9

I had no previous legislative experience, so I needed someone I could go to quietly and say, What’s happening now. What’s going on. What happens next. And why. I needed someone who wasn’t trying to compete with me and who wouldn’t use my lack of experience against me.
