Sample Book Insights:
#1 I grew up in South Philadelphia, and as a young boy, I was tasked with helping feed my family. I would go around the neighborhood and sell coffee for a nickel to people at the garages. I would make a quarter, and give it to my mother.
#2 I grew up in a family of gamblers, drinkers, and card players. I was a good kid, but a devilish one. I was exposed to alcohol at a young age.
#3 I went to junior high and worked for Pop at the same time. I was a devil, and I would undercut the other tailors to get the work. I learned military skills at the camp, and in 1941, I quit high school and went to work in a defense factory.
#4 I was exempt from the draft because of my job, so I decided to enlist in the Marines. The paratroopers were all volunteer, and the elite of the Army. I knew I could pass the training because I was in great physical shape.

#1

I grew up in South Philadelphia, and as a young boy, I was tasked with helping feed my family. I would go around the neighborhood and sell coffee for a nickel to people at the garages. I would make a quarter, and give it to my mother.

#2

I grew up in a family of gamblers, drinkers, and card players. I was a good kid, but a devilish one. I was exposed to alcohol at a young age.

#3

I went to junior high and worked for Pop at the same time. I was a devil, and I would undercut the other tailors to get the work. I learned military skills at the camp, and in 1941, I quit high school and went to work in a defense factory.

#4

I was exempt from the draft because of my job, so I decided to enlist in the Marines. The paratroopers were all volunteer, and the elite of the Army. I knew I could pass the training because I was in great physical shape.

#5

I grew up in South Philadelphia, with five siblings. Our house was three stories, one room on each floor. We called those houses Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. We were raised to work hard for whatever we wanted in life.

#6

I grew up in a neighborhood full of Catholic boys, and we all went to Catholic school. The nuns were strict, but not as hard on the girls.

#7

I was sent to South Philadelphia High School, and while I was there, I dropped out to help the family with money. I began taking numbers on the streets, and made money betting on horse races. I gave everything to my mother.

#8

I waited months to be called for duty, and when I was finally called in November, I was sandblasting cruisers that were being converted into aircraft carriers at New York Ship in Camden, New Jersey. I was exempt from the war because my job assisted the war effort.
Insights from Chapter 2

#1

I made friends real easy at Camp Toccoa. The kids that didn’t know what was up or down thought I knew more than they did, and they learned from me. I was a tyrant when it came to taking authority, but I was a chickenshit when it came to training.

#2

I tried to get to know the other men in the company, and I liked most of them. They were all good soldiers. I liked Johnny Martin, who was a loner and a force to be reckoned with.

#3

I was skeptical of Lieutenant Winters’s background, as I knew he was a Quaker, but Irespected him for his physical conditioning and combat basics. I knew Winters would be a good leader because he was a good example.

#4

The training was extremely hard, and the other companies knew it. Sobel made sure to make us miserable, because he knew we would want to kill him but just wanted our wings.

#5

In Easy Company, only two guys were married: Frank Perconte and Johnny Martin. The rest of the troopers were single. We all got real close, and while we were competing, we were bonding. We listened to the Andrews Sisters, Glenn Miller, and big bands on the radio.

#6

The 506th Parachute Battalion was the first unit to be sent to train at Fort Benning. It was there that the men learned how to endure and persevere through difficult situations.

#7

The training at Fort Benning was straight jump training, and it was tougher than Toccoa. It was the first time an entire regiment, three battalions and battalion headquarters, trained together and went on to jump training together.

#8

The platoon was broken down into three twelve-man rifle squads, with a machine gunner and assistant machine gunner, plus a six-man mortar squad to operate the platoon’s 60mm mortar. I was promoted to sergeant of the mortar squad, and had Don Malarkey, Brad Freeman, Warren Skip Muck, and Alex Penkala in my squad.

#9

In Toccoa, Sergeant Jimmy Diel was promoted to 2nd platoon sergeant. Leo Boyle, who was in Johnny Martin’s platoon, was promoted to sergeant. Sobel would steal the guns from the sleeping guys, like a thief in the night.
