Whether you’re vacationing, visiting on business, studying or living in Ukraine, this is the phrasebook that will give you more of what you need to enjoy tourism, make friends, carry on basic conversations, have fun, cope with both day-to-day living and emergency situations, and partake of Ukrainian cuisine. Aside from covering a much broader spectrum of subjects than other Ukrainian phrasebooks, it gives you 6-8 times more phrases and terms to work with. Something else you’ll like about this phrasebook is that it’s quick and easy to find what you want to say. Phrases and terms are grouped under their key words, and the key words are in alphabetical order (not in the usual categories of other phrasebooks that often leave you guessing what’s where). Got a phrase or term in mind? Go to it’s key word, the same as you would in a dictionary, and chances are good that you’ll find it there. Because the phrases and vocabulary in this book cover a wide spectrum of interests, activities and situations, there is a rich supply of material for people of all ages, male or female, married or single. We sincerely hope that, whoever you are, whatever your age, you’ll be able to put this phrasebook to the purposes for which it’s intended – enjoying tourism, making friends, socializing, engaging in recreational activities, and coping with everyday situations in Ukraine. Main words All phrases and terms in the phrasebook are grouped under the “ main words ,” which they contain.  For example, the phrase “ We’ll call you later. ” is listed under the main word “ call .” All main words are in red font. Some phrases appear in the dictionary more than once, because they contain more than one important main word.  For example, the phrase “ Could you show me around the city? ” is listed once under the main word “ city ” and a second time under “ show .” In front of each red main word there is a tiny x, which should be typed (regular size) when searching for the word. This will produce the main word that you’re searching for and avoid mass results for it. Parts of speech Each listed main word is followed by its abbreviated part of speech, such as n for “noun,” vt for “verb transitive,” etc.  (See the page “ Abbreviations Used in the Dictionary ”) Tilde substituting main word For all term entries, a tilde ~ substitutes for the main word of the term.  For example, under the main word store ,  “ electronics store ” is listed as electronics ~ .  Similarly, “ call back ” under the main word “ call ” is given as ~ back . Slash = or Throughout the phrasebook a slash / is used to mean “or,”  i.e., that you can choose one or the other.  The choices are numbered, in parentheses, both on the English side and the Ukrainian side.  Hence, the term Let’s make camp (1) here. / (2) there. Давайте (Fam: Давай) розіб’єм табір (1) тут. / (2) там. Da-VAY-te ( Fam: Da-VAY) ro-zee-B*YEM TA-beer (1) toot. / (2) tam. can be said with either   “toot.” or “tam.” .  The same is true of parts of phrases that are numbered and separated by a slash /.  These will sometimes be preceded or followed -- or both -- by three dots.  For example, in the phrase “ I enjoy (1) being (together) / (2) talking with you. Для меня наслаждение (1) быть (вместе) … / (2) разговаривать… с Вами ( Fam : тобой) . Dlya  me-NYA na-slazh-DE-nee-ye (1) bÿt’ (VMES-te)… / (2) raz-ga-VA-ree-vat’… s V A-mee ( Fam:   ta-BOY ), you can choose to say “I enjoy being together with you. Dlya me-NYA na-slazh-DE-nee-ye bяt’ (VMES-te) s VA-mee ( Fam: ta-BOY) .” or “I enjoy talking with you. Dlya  me-NYA na-slazh-DE-nee-ye raz-ga-VA-ree-vat’ s VA-mee ( Fam: ta-BOY) .”   .  Parentheses = optional Words or parts of phrases (not italicized in English)  in parentheses are optional.  In the phrase “ No one can match you (in any way) . Ніхто не може зрівнятися з Вами ( Fam : тобою) (ні в чому). Nee-KHTO ne MO-zhe zreev-NYA-tÿ-sya z VA-mÿ ( Fam: to-BO-yoo) (nee v CHO-moo). ” , you could include or omit the words (in any way) in both English and Ukrainian. In a very few cases, an English word in parentheses is optional in English, but has no counterpart in Ukrainian:  the sentence in Ukrainian will be the same either way. Feminine, neuter and plural forms of words For Ukrainian adjectives, which have masculine, feminine, neuter and plural forms, the phonetic endings of the latter three, preceded by a hyphen, are given in that order (f, nt, pl) in parentheses. In phrases, the feminine form of a word appears in italics in parentheses following the underlined masculine form.
