Dear Entrepreneur,
Thank you for purchasing my new ‘How to become an Entrepreneur’ information guide – I very much value your custom.
So, you want to become an Entrepreneur? Maybe you have a business idea that you think could be the 'next big thing', or maybe you are just seeking to earn an extra bit of cash in your spare time. Whatever your ideas, dreams or aspirations, it is possible to be whatever you want. This may seem like a bold statement, but it is in fact true! Many people are beginning to believe in themselves, taking the plunge and starting their own business or company. The latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Report shows that the UK has the third highest entrepreneurship rate of the G7 economies, behind the US and Canada.
I feel sure that you’ll nd this guide informative, inspiring and motivating. Take the time to read the content, learn from the mistakes of others, and above all – believe in yourself!
I started the business ‘How2become’ in 2005 and the idea came from nowhere. Despite having only 3 GCSE’s I have managed to make over £3,000,000 so far; if I can do it, so can you!
Throughout the guide I have intentionally written about my business and how I started and grew it. I have done this because I have learnt so many things along the way, and I wanted to share these with you as I progress through the guide. I have called them ‘Richard’s tips’ and I would urge you to use them when developing and growing your own business.
Good luck and best wishes,
Richard McMunn

GREAT IDEAS COME FROM NOTHING
Take a look at any business around you. Whether it is on the Internet or the high street, in most cases that business started from nothing. Look at Google for example – a simple idea that has grown to be one of the most successful businesses in the world. In fact, Google now enjoys a turnover of millions of pounds every day! That business idea came from nothing and was turned into an online phenomenon.
Perhaps a good example of how a business can grow from nothing is the business from which you purchased this guide – How2become Ltd. My name is Richard McMunn and I started my first business, How2become, in 2005. I would say that I’ve always been a creative person, determined, driven and enthusiastic. Prior to 2005 I had never been in business, with the exception of a mobile car washing business that I set up when I was fifteen years old, and which was aptly named ‘ Rick’s Mobile Car Wash and Valeting Service ’.
I used to wash cars on my local housing estate and charge £1.50 for each wash. I can remember offering a unique service where I would carry buckets of water round to people’s homes in order to save them from getting out of bed on a Sunday morning. When they eventually woke up, their car had been cleaned. I would then call round later on in the day to collect the money. I used to earn about £70 a weekend, which for a teenager was a lot of money back in the 1980’s. The reason why that particular business was a success was simply because I had a very good USP (Unique Selling Point). The fact that I used to take my own buckets of water to their house in order to wash their car was very appealing to my customers, because it meant they didn’t have to get out of bed on a Sunday morning to fill up my bucket! Although this meant a lot of extra effort for me, it had the desired effect of bringing me lots of business.
Whatever business you decide to start, always think about your USP and how you intend attracting your valued customers. Also be prepared to work very hard and put in lots of effort in order to make your business succeed. As I have always said to the people that I mentor, success in business is a choice.

Richard’s tip…
Whatever business you decide to start you should always focus on your customer. Try to create products and services that improve your customer’s life in some form or other. If you do this, you will make money. People who go in to business solely to make money rarely succeed. Have your customers' best interests at heart and you will be successful.
I carried on with the car washing business for a few months until I left school and decided to join the Royal Navy at the tender age of sixteen. Applying to join the Royal Navy proved to be a difficult experience, because I failed the medical for being too fat! Although I was devastated at the time, the experience actually proved to be a positive one and one that would influence the way in which I approached setbacks in my life thereafter.
I can remember attending the Royal Navy medical in Preston. I sat in the doctor’s surgery waiting room and was confident that I would pass. I entered the room and was asked to undress. After a few minor checks and the inevitable ‘cough and drop’ I was told to stand on the weighing scales. This was the first time I’d ever stood on weighing scales in my life; I could immediately feel disaster approaching. I looked down cautiously at the scales only to see the needle fixed firmly on the fifteen stone mark. All the meat and potato pies I had eaten in my youth suddenly flashed before my eyes. I was officially too fat to join the Royal Navy!
I stood back off the scales and started to get dressed. I had the same feeling you get when you are half way through your driving test and you carry out a manoeuvre that you know only too well has caused you to fail. In the corner of my eye I could see the doctor writing down a brief assessment on his marking sheet with his spectacles balancing precariously on the edge of his nose – he didn’t look impressed.
Within five minutes I was walking out of the surgery feeling extremely dejected. He had informed me that I needed to lose a stone in weight before they would permit me to start the training course. On the way out of the surgery he had also handed me a small sheet of paper which detailed what I should and should not eat, if I was to be successful in transforming myself from a fat spotty teenager to the kind of young man the Royal Navy would permit through its doors.
Whilst I sat at the bus stop waiting for the bus to take me home, I started to study the diet sheet the doctor had handed to me. I thought to myself, even my pet rabbit could not survive on this crap! The sheet of paper consisted of the following recommended meal:
Breakfast - scrambled eggs on two slices of toast with one cup of tea.
Mid-morning snack – one apple
Lunch – one jacket potato with small portion of beans
Afternoon snack – one banana
Evening meal – one small portion of chicken breast, half a cup of boiled rice and vegetables
Evening snack – one wholemeal biscuit and a small glass of milk
(Note – drink one pint of water twenty minutes before each meal)
Now for most people, this would seem to be a decent daily intake of food; however, it was probably half of what I would normally eat, which explains why I was overweight!
The reason I am talking about this now is that I have learnt throughout my life, if I apply discipline and structure to my work I WILL be successful. Discipline is the root cause of my success. If you are disciplined in your life, you too are guaranteed to achieve. Here’s what happened next.
As the bus approached to take me home from the medical I made a decision. This decision proved to be the catalyst that changed not only my approach to fitness, but my entire attitude to life. I decided there and then that I would walk home instead of getting the bus. As I walked home I promised myself that I would walk to college every day and then back hom
