G reek myths have many heroes. Greece needed them because, in the stories, there are also many monsters! Read on and learn what the heroes were up against.
Monsters on all sides
I n the Greek myths, the world is full of dangers. There are monsters under the ground, in the mountains and forests, and able to rise up out of the sea without warning and sink your ship. There are monstrous gods, thinking monsters who are as tricky as people, and monsters who are like something from a nightmare.
Are you ready to meet them?
Monstrous gods
I n the Greek myths, the Titans were the rulers of everything. Their children, the Olympians, overthrew the Titans. But there were great, evil powers that even a god would have a tough time standing up to.
Typhon
T yphon was called “the father of all monsters”. His mother was Gaia, the earth, and his father was Tartarus, or hell.
Typhon was so tall that when he stood upright his head was close to the stars. His lower body was two huge snakes, and where a human has fingers Typhon had dragon heads. He had wings that blotted out the sun when he flew. He could shoot flames from his eyes.
O nly Zeus, the supreme Olympian god, could fight Typhon. And when he did, the battle went on for days. Their fighting caused earthquakes and tsunamis, and it seemed like the whole Earth might break apart.
