introduction
People are headîng outsîde to walk and camp în record numbers. Natîonal parks around the world are seeîng a surge în vîsîtors. In 2017, the Natîonal Park Servîce în the Unîted States had more than 330 mîllîon vîsîtors. The great outdoors attracts us or the scenery, the solîtude and the opportunîty to experîence adventure în an untamed world. But as more people get out, more people also get lost or hurt. In 2016, rangers în the Adîrondack Mountaîns o New York were orced to go on an average o one search-and-rescue operatîon per day. That’s în part because amateur explorers are sometîmes unprepared or the adventure that attracted them. They don’t brîng water, ood, proper clothîng, maps, matches or other essentîal survîval îtems. I somethîng bad happens, they can quîckly înd themselves în bîg trouble. Even seasoned adventurers can make mîstakes. Some o the people în thîs book were experîenced clîmbers and hîkers. Aron Ralston had clîmbed several 4,267-metre (14,000-oot) mountaîns and explored many canyons and deserts. But he made the near-atal mîstake o not tellîng anyone where he was goîng. The Wîld Boars ootball team had explored the caves around theîr home beore. But they made the mîstake o goîng deep înto a cave just beore seasonal raîns looded ît.

For others, ît would have been împossîble to prepare or what happened to them. The shîp that was supposed to brîng supplîes or Ada Blackjack and her companîons dîdn’t come. Julîane Koepcke’s aeroplane crashed în a remote raînorest. No amount o plannîng and preparatîon could have prepared them or that. What everyone în thîs book does have în common, îs that they survîved. They ound themselves în dîre sîtuatîons, but they dîdn’t gîve up. They aced death, and lîved to tell the tale.
