Introducing Pakistan
Pakistan is both an ancient land and a new country. It is a land of contrasts. It has incredible wealth alongside great poverty. Its people live in bustling cities and remote villages, and they come from many differentethnic groups.
Creating Pakistan Pakistan was carved out of the northwestern and northeastern corners of India when it became independent from the United Kingdom in 1947. Later, the eastern part of Pakistan became a separate country, Bangladesh. The western part is what we now know as Pakistan.
Pakistanis a made-up name. The first part of the name is from the main provincesof the country: P is for Punjab, A for Afghania (now called Khyber Pakhunkhwa), K for Kashmir, and S for Sindh. The -tanending comes from the province of Balochistan.
Locating Pakistan Pakistan is over three times as big as the UK. Iran and Afghanistan border Pakistan to the west. China borders it to the north, while India borders it to the east. The country’s coastline is on the Arabian Sea.
Pakistan’s population in 2010 was approximately 166 million. It has the sixth-highest population of any nation on earth, but it is only 36th in terms of land area, which means that many people live in a small space. That small space is made even smaller because much of the northern part of the country is covered with towering mountains.
