Chapter 1
It was a sold-out concert. Standing room only to see the world tour of Binnie and the Jets. They had become the world’s greatest rock band just a few years after Quinn had formed the group. Every song the band released became a number one hit. The first album went gold. The second album soared to a platinum rating. The third album rocketed past the first to hit the diamond rating. The iTunes servers crashed the night the last album was released because too many fans hit the Internet at once to download the album.
The tightly packed crowd was getting restless waiting for Binnie to take the stage. Spotlights flashed around the stage as if they were looking for the rock star. The crowd began to take up a unison chant of, “Binnie! Binnie! Binnie!” As the chant swarmed throughout the crowd, the noise turned into a thunderous roar. Now people were chanting and clapping the name Bi nnie !
As the thundering sound of the crowd chanting swelled within the outdoor stadium, the people began stomping their feet, clapping their hands, and shouting, “Binnie! Binnie! Binnie!” The sound became a constant thunder that seemed to connect to the spotlight’s lighting effect on the stage.
Binnie and the Jets’ manager walked out behind the curtain and stepped into the spotlight. He held up his hands with a motion asking for silence. The man was tall and wore a white suit, a blue shirt, and a yellow tie. The crowd quieted a bit, but most people continued to chant, clap, and stomp in unison. “She’s on her way,” Binnie’s manager shouted over the sound system. “My name is Rappin’ Rymin’ Rickey, and I am Binnie’s manager,” Rickey said. He held his hands up over his head. “She is on her way,” Rickey repeated, hoping someone would listen to his message. “But she’s stuck in traffic on the I-90 Freeway. She should be here soon.” Rickey waved his outstretched hands.
As Rickey walked off the stage, the sound of the crowd grew louder.
“What are we going to do?” asked Carlo, one of the stagehands.
“If you don’t do something, they will tear the place apart,” screamed Tom, another stagehand. “I know, I know,” replied Rickey. The sound grew even more deafening as the crowd became restless, waiting for Binnie the Super Star.
Suddenly a thundering whirling sound could be heard overhead. Everyone looked up as a helicopter appeared high above the stage. A spotlight focused on the side door of the hovering helicopter. The band members of the Jets ran onto the stage and started playing their introductory music. It was the same music that they opened every concert with.
The drummer started to play a sustained beat and added some cymbal crashes to emphasize his rhythm. The bass player followed the drummer’s lead as she played bass notes to accompany the drummer’s beat. A guitar melted into the music the band was playing, and people started to stop their chanting, clapping, and stomping feet.
The side door of the helicopter opened. The band played their music even louder and faster. All the spotlights swiveled up to shine on the figure standing in the doorway of the helicopter. When everyone realized who it was, the crowd of over one hundred thousand people began to cheer uncontrollably. People were jumping up and down and screaming at the top of their lungs. Cell phones flashed as people in the audience took pictures of the fantastic event.
The figure in the doorway of the helicopter was dressed in a red shirt and black pants. She had a white cowgirl hat with a gold B in the center of the cap. The rock star was wearing gold boots, which came up to her knees.
A big boom exploded from the stage, a cloud of smoke filled the air, and a cable lowered the rock star down to the stage. As Binnie unhooked herself from the line, she did cartwheels across the stage and stopped in front of the microphone. The figure spread her legs, put her hands on her hips, and stood like a granite statue. The band stopped playing as a stagehand brought out a golden glitter guitar for the rock star to play. The crowd erupted into a thunderous chant of “Quinn! Quinn!”
***
Quinn shook her head as she came out of her daydream and realized her teacher was talking to her.
“Are you with us, Quinn?” asked Mrs. John, trying to regain her student’s attention.
“Yes, Mrs. John,” answered Quinn. She was somewhat embarrassed.
“Good for you Quinn. I thought you might be daydreaming.” She continued looking at Quinn over the top of her reading glasses.
“Sorry,” Mrs. John,” Quinn said rather sheepishly.
“Who can tell me the area of a square if the sides are…,” Mrs. John’s voice began to fade out of Quinn’s attention span again. She had worked very hard in math to get into Mrs. John’s advanced math class. Unfortunately, Quinn’s attention span was not keeping up with the class work. She often found herself daydreaming and thinking about things other than the math problems on the whiteboard in front of the classroom.
The school bell rang, and the students stood up and began to leave. Quinn came out of her daydream again. The bell seemed to be the only thing Quinn had paid attention to during math class. She gathered her backpack and started toward the classroom door.
“Miss Quinn,” announced Mrs. John.
“May I please have a moment of your time before you leave?” asked Mrs. John.
Quinn turned around and walked over to Mrs. John’s desk. “Yes, ma’am,” she responded as politely as possible.
“I noticed that you have been daydreaming a lot lately during class time.” Mrs. John was sitting on the edge of her desk.
“I guess so.” Quinn did not know how to answer Mrs. John’s question.
“Is there anything you want to talk about or tell me?” asked Mrs. John gently.
“Like what? I don’t think so.”
“Well, if you ever want to talk to me, please feel free to stay after class, and we can chat then,” reassured Mrs. John with a gentle smile.
Quinn turned and started toward the classroom door again.
Mrs. John said, “I think it best if you take a seat up front so we can do a better job staying connected.” She just smiled because there was no response necessary to her statement. Quinn would be sitting up front from now on. Quinn turned and rolled her eyes as she continued out of the classroom.
That evening after dinner, Quinn went downstairs, plugged in her guitar to the amp, and started practicing. Quinn’s guitar teacher was Mr. Apapa. He instructed Quinn to practice her scales every day and to try and learn a fun, new song every week. Quin wanted to get through the dull scales part of her practice to focus on the new music she was learning.
She turned on her amp and strummed her guitar. Nothing. No sound at all. Quinn checked her connection from the guitar to the amp. The link appeared to be OK. She fiddled with the knobs on her electric guitar, trying to determine if the sound was turned down. After doing everything she could think of, Quinn unplugged her guitar.
Quinn stared at her guitar. Oh great, she thought. First, I get in trouble at school; now my guitar won’t work . Quinn placed her guitar on the stand and went back upstairs.
“Hi, Binnie,” Alice, Quinn’s younger sister, said when Quinn walked into the living room. Quinn’s family and cousins called her Binnie from time to time because Alice and the cousins couldn’t say Quinn or Quinnie when they were younger.
