Chapter 1
A young girl walked slowly down a trail that weaved its way through tall pine trees. It was a cool autumn morning and the path ahead was shrouded in fog. Fast running water rushed over the rocks in a nearby stream. Invisible birds chirped high in the branches. A brown layer of wet dead leaves and pine needles covered the ground and she stepped carefully so she wouldn’t slip. Wet leaves squished under her tennis shoes.
Focused on keeping her footing, she was startled when a gray bushy tailed squirrel darted across the path in front of her and disappeared into the woods. She skidded to a stop and watched as three baby squirrels scampered across the path and disappeared into the woods after their mother.
“Casey,” she shouted. “Did you see that?”
“See what Kiley?” asked a young boy who emerged from the curtain of fog behind her.
Kiley pointed towards the woods and said “It was a family of bushy tailed squirrels.”
Casey looked to where his sister pointed but didn’t see anything. “Bummer! I missed them.”
“Gray bushy tailed squirrels are Judy’s favorite,” said Kiley to her brother. Life had changed for the two young children. Casey and Kiley now had a stepmom. It had taken almost a year for them to adjust to balancing between their mom and a stepmom, but they had, and now appreciated her very much.
They began to walk along the path again. Drops of water dripped from the pine branches and landed softly on the wet ground. Kiley led the way along the familiar trail.
Kiley rounded a corner and saw a large blue bird standing on top of a big, brown hollow log nestled in the wet leaves.
“Tuttle!” she yelled and ran towards the log. Just before she reached the bird, she slipped on the wet leaves and landed on her backside. “Ouch!”
Casey rushed over and helped her get up. He brushed the wet leaves off the back of her blue jeans. “Are you OK?” he asked.
“Yes,” answered Kiley in an embarrassed voice.
“OK. Now I can laugh,” said Casey and he did. “You looked like you slipped on a banana peel in a cartoon.”
“Very funny.”
“Hi Casey and Kiley,” said the bird. Normally, the children would have been shocked to hear a bird talk but Tuttle was not a real bird. He was an alien robot who spoke with a mechanical voice. Using a multi-language program, he could talk to the children in English. The program enabled him to speak every known language in the Universe.
“Hi Tuttle,” they answered in unison. Although the two children were not twins, they often had the same thoughts at the same time.
They looked at their friend. Tuttle’s body was made of a shiny, blue metal. He was about two feet tall with yellow eyes and a red beak. He had short legs with black webbed feet that were perched on the top of the fallen hollow log. Although Tuttle’s exterior was a bird-like robot, he was not a robot. He was an intelligent alien being whose original body no longer existed. His consciousness was inside the metal robot. Tuttle came from a planet of beings that looked like birds and his robot body was built to look the way he did when he was alive.
Tuttle worked as an Observer for the Monitors. The Monitors were highly intelligent aliens that watched over and protected the Universe. Observers like Tuttle were sent to planets throughout the universe where the Monitors wanted to gather information.
By studying the information collected by the Observers, the Monitors would determine if action needed to be taken to protect a planet and its inhabitants or to prevent a planet and its beings from destroying other planets or beings. If they predicted a threat, the Monitors would send the Peacekeepers. The Peacekeepers, were alien warriors, who would step in and stop the threats.
Inside the fallen hollow log was a technology that Tuttle called a Bridge. Bridges were portals that enabled Tuttle and Observers like him to travel across the universe and even backwards in time to collect information for the Monitors.
Although they had found Tuttle’s story to be like something out of a science fiction movie, Casey and Kiley had already accompanied him on three adventures. Now, they were ready to go on another. In the past they would come to the log in hopes of finding Tuttle but this time Tuttle let them know he was coming.
Casey and Kiley received Tuttle’s message through their Influencers. The Monitors had given each of them an Influencer on their last adventure. It was a small black box with a red button on its side. When the red button was pushed, the device enabled them to influence people and change their minds. The children now always carried them in their pockets. Even though they didn’t know the Influencers had that capability, they both received a message letting them know when Tuttle was visiting their planet.
“Are you ready?” asked Tuttle looking at the young boy.
“I’m ready,” said Casey holding up his brown canvas backpack which was filled with snacks, a water bottle, matches, a first aid kit, his favorite pocket knife, sunscreen and a flashlight.
Casey’s reflection on Tuttle’s shiny blue metal body showed a twelve-year-old boy with blue eyes and short, blonde hair. He was wearing a blue Golden State Warriors shirt, black cargo shorts, black hiking boots and a black San Francisco Giants baseball cap.
Tuttle then turned and looked at the young girl. Her reflection showed a ten-year-old girl with green eyes and long blonde hair tied up in a ponytail. She was wearing blue jeans, a gray Disneyland shirt, black tennis shoes and a pink baseball cap.
“Me too,” said Kiley holding up her pink fanny pack which was filled with snacks, a water bottle, a flashlight, sunscreen, rope and her favorite pocket knife.
“Where are we going?” they both asked at the same time. They looked at each other and smiled.
“We are going to ancient Egypt,” Tuttle said. “The Monitors want to learn more about the role of the Nile River in the early development of human civilization.”
Kiley looked at Casey. “Judy loves Egypt! This is going to be great!”

“Let’s go,” said Casey. He got down on his knees and crawled into the mouth of the hollow log. His sister followed on his heels. They scrambled on all fours along the damp bottom of the log towards a pulsing blue light that rippled along the walls of the log. Tuttle hopped along behind them.
The children and Tuttle stopped in the middle of the log. A large, clear bubble surrounded them and they felt themselves slowly being encased by soft, blue foam. Kiley grabbed her brother’s hand and held it tight. Even though they couldn’t move, they could breathe easily.
Soon they started to float. They felt themselves rising but could not see anything but blue. Although they had no idea how it worked, the children knew that this blue foam and the bubble that held the foam were the technology that transported them to Tuttle’s destinations.
They waited patiently. Soon the blue light disappeared and the foam began to dissolve. The bubble hovered a few feet above the ground. It was not moving. Once the blue foam was gone, the young boy and girl could see outside of the bubble.
