From the Author

As the truck rolled along, mile after mile, life became very boring for my son. He was “safe”, strapped into his car seat behind me, but there was no real interaction. He couldn’t even see my eyes, only the back of Daddy’s head.
Jonathan and I would travel in this fashion everywhere we went. In his search for a diversion, I would frequently hear him say, “Daddy, tell me a story.”
This I found to be hard work, especially when I was tired. One day, on an extended drive, I heard those dreaded words, “Daddy, tell me a story”. I made some pitiful excuse, hoping he would be distracted by something else and let me off the hook.
But then, I paused and really thought about what was being requested. My son was asking for a part of me. What did I believe? What were my values?
What more could a parent ask? Let’s really look at what I had at hand:
• A captive child (literally tied to his seat)
• An attentive child (I’m the only act in town)
• A request for input (I won’t get that in a few more years)
• A significant period of time with all of these factors in place
• An opportunity to tailor my production, to teach values I cherish

I would have to be certifiable to allow this opportunity to get away! (That accusation has already been made)
From this realization, Slim was born. Where he came from, I have no clue. I had started telling a story about a young boy named Jonathan, walking through the woods, when Slim just popped into the picture.
I write the same way. I don’t know what’s next until I see it appear on the screen. Can you imagine how much fun it is for me to write these stories? I can’t wait for the next chapter to start!
Slim and Jonathan have wonderful adventures together. Between them, they know what is right and wrong. They choose goodness, kindness, compassion, love, trust, caring, perseverance, persistence, integrity, devotion, commitment, bravery, honesty, loyalty, and any other attribute I may want my son to possess.
Beyond this, if Jonathan and Slim have a problem which they cannot resolve, they come to Jonathan’s father for guidance!
I do not profess to know child psychology (I had to use “spell check” to make sure I spelled it correctly), but what I do know is that our children look into our souls to decide how they will live. If I can help mold a life, I have been successful in living.
Our children give us such joy, such meaning. “Daddy, tell me a story” is a very small price to pay for this privilege.
Don’t be surprised if your child asks countless moral questions as you read a story of this nature. Answer them all. That’s the purpose of the stories I tell my son. That’s why Slim exists.
Take time for your children; read to them, tell them a story, and love them more than life itself.
We can’t afford to fail. We’ve got one chance and then it’s gone. Make the most of it. The world will be a better place for people and for dragons. mgl
