Dragontide
Spring was coming to the Fairdrake Hills and Danny was enjoying the gentle warmth of the sun on his scales as he looked out across the valley towards the village of Whyrum. Fresh green leaves were just starting to appear in the woods, and a few early lambs were jumping around in the fields below his cave. Just last night twin lambs had been born, and he could hear their proud mother bleating the news to the other sheep.
Danny was a dragon whose full name is Danylgan-Oeagan (Dan-eel-gan Oh-ay-gan), but as that was too difficult for his little friend Susie to say, she simply called him Danny.
That night, as can often happen in early Spring, the weather changed and snow began to fall. Danny, snug in his cave, slept soundly, unaware of the snow until he was awoken by the frantic calls of the new mother sheep.
Dawn was starting to break, and he could just see the mother sheep standing next to where the snow had drifted deeply against a wall halfway down the valley. She was trying to dig in the snow, and Danny realised her twins must be buried underneath.
Danny sprang into action and flew to their rescue, quickly digging them out with his big claws. They lay still, and he knew they needed warming up fast so he gently blew warm air at them.
At first nothing happened, and then he heard a quiet bleat. He kept blowing warm air at them as they struggled to their feet, but then he heard another sound: the farmer was slowly driving up the track towards the field in his Land Rover.
Danny quickly directed a blast of superheated air into the snow in front of him and it instantly turned to steam. Hidden by the cloud of steam he flew off, back to the safety of his cave.
