The Good Hippopotamus
This story is about a hippopotamus, a name nearly always shortened to hippo.
The hippopotamus is in a group of animals called pachyderms, which means thick skinned (like an elephant or rhinoceros or water buffalo). Hippos do not sweat but produce a red liquid called blood sweat. Also, hippos do not swim but rather glide in the water by pushing themselves along off other objects, including other hippos or hidden logs on the riverbed. They can stay underwater for up to five minutes.
There are two different species of hippos. One is the common hippopotamus, and the other is the pygmy hippopotamus. Both live in Africa. Of course, many hippos live in zoos around the world.
Despite their size, they often seem to be regarded as cuddly and friendly. But in their natural surroundings, they are far from that. In fact, they are amongst the most dangerous of African animals. Even so, once they are tamed, they can be as friendly as a pet dog.
In real life, there is a lady who has a pet hippo that roams throughout her home, even her bedroom! You can see her story on YouTube.
Hippos have huge heads that hold huge mouths with razor sharp tusks. Their bite is almost as powerful as that of the Crocodile.
Now that you know a little about hippos, my story tonight is about Queenie, the female leader of a school (or group) of hippos.
