That all changes a ship from Aguamenta, the land of his birth, catches him, arrests him, and takes him back to the country for questioning, imprisonment, and likely execution. But when King Alcatraz offers James the chance to reform, Jim discovers his goals might be in reach after all.

The Pirate Prince: The Mystery of King Alcatraz and the Vizier

Even though the worst seemed to be over, it turns out the fun is just beginning! PROLOGUE
In the country of Aguamenta, off the coast of central France, lived the Cooke family—Christopher, Emily, and ten-year-old James. Christopher had bright golden hair and honey-colored eyes which sparkled with joy as he did his carpentry work. Emily had dark hair and warm brown eyes. She was a gentle, wise woman who taught her son to always think of others and be considerate to their feelings. James was active, headstrong, happy and, well, let’s just say that he was a bit of a rascal. Like most boys his age, he wanted to skip working for his dad in the shop and go play. His mother would often find James in the front garden playing some game of make-believe, imagining that he was on a ship, commanding and fearless. He was a natural leader, even if the only mates he had were his stuffed animals. He would assign chores to his stuffed lion, zebra, and antelope. Often, he’d put his hands on his hips, and scold Leo the Lion: “Remember Leo, no eating zebras or antelopes in my house or else you’ll have to spend the night in the greenhouse.”
His mother WOULD call for him to come in, whenever it was too dark for James to play outside. James never liked going inside, but he’d stop playing, gather all his stuffed animals in his arms, and go in. His father, more often than not, was the one who insisted that James stay inside. James thought that his father’s protection was a little over the top. He had learned to keep that opinion to himself, though.
It was a perfect family. True, they didn’t have much in the way of comforts or money, but they were all healthy and happy. That was the most important thing.
One dark night, the family had all settled down for their nightly routines. James had finally gotten permission, for just this Saturday night, Saturday the 13 th , to stay up with his parents and play with his wooden toys. He had soldiers, cannons and a small horse with a string attached to pull it. “The cavalry has come to relieve you, Captain Cork!” James cried. “Pew! Pew! Oh no, the enemy is near!”
Emily, knitting a sweater, smiled as her son played. Christopher was quietly trying to figure out the finances for the shop. He could just barely read, write and do simple mathematics. James readied a good shot with his cannon sling shot.
“Alright, now, ready aim—” James started.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out. The bullet zipped through the window then went into the back wall. Luckily, no one was hurt but the Cooke family was shaken by the shot. James was bewildered and scared. He glanced down at his slingshot, unnerved at the coincidence. His parents were totally terrified because they knew who might have fired the shot.
“Please, God. It isn’t . . . ?” Emily asked.
“It is. Take James upstairs, Em, and barricade the doors,” Christopher said, standing up, grabbing his gun and quickly loading it. “I’ll try to hold him off!” He steadied his gun, aiming it at the door.
James grew even more scared by his parents’ bewildering conversation. “Mama, what is it? Who’s at the door?” he asked, as his mother picked him up, quickly carrying him upstairs to his room. Angry shouts echoed outside their front door.
Emily didn’t answer, so focused was she on getting James up to his bedroom. James expected that once they were in his room, his mother would set him on his feet. But once they had reached his bedroom, Emily shut and locked the door then carried her son to his bed and sat with him on it. James was frightened by the shouts at their front door and the weird protective way his mother was acting towards him, even though Emily was trying to comfort him.
He felt more upset when his mother kissed his forehead, whispering, “Be brave, my son. Always, be brave.” Downstairs, there was a bang as the door was swept off its hinges. James could hear his father shouting, more pushing and shoving, then a thump as his father was overpowered. Some feet hurried up the staircase.
Suddenly, there was a loud knocking on James’ door and a male voice, not his father’s, commanded, “Open up, Emily Cooke! We know you’re in there! Come out! And bring the kid!”
Emily looked sadly at James, stood up, motioned for James to stay on his bed, then cracked open the door. “My son is asleep in his bed. Perhaps Mr. Skinner can wait until morning,” Emily explained.
But the scary man said, “No. Bring the brat out into the shop. NOW! Captain Skinner will not wait.”
James had never in his whole life heard his mother speak like that. And who, on God’s good green earth, was Skinner? He wasn’t sure if a person named Skinner could be a good person. It sure didn’t sound like it, based on the conversation between his mother and these fearsome pirates.
“Mama, who is Skinner?” James whispered as his mother once again picked him up and carried him down the stairs.
The scary men glared at him and his mother. His mother didn’t answer his question. Her sad defeated stance spoke volumes about how she felt. James wanted to get away from these terrifying men as fast as possible. He was comforted to feel his mother’s arms around him.
Emily slowly walked back into the shop room. Christopher stood defeated and scared in the middle of the room. There was a cut above his left eye, a bruise on his right cheek. His honey-colored eyes flicked back and forth between his family and the bandits. A few more frightening men, dressed as pirates and bandits, frowned as Emily entered. The men held mallets in their fists and guns in their belts, ready to be used at a moment’s notice.
A man who seemed to be in charge, probably the “Skinner” of whom his mother and the frightening men had spoken, walked over to James and his mother with an authoritative stride.
“Is this your son?” he asked, jerking his chin at James. His ice-blue eyes swept over the scene, as if he were determined that no person would be unnoticed.
“N-no. He’s just a neighbor,” Emily lied in a shaking voice. She slowly put James down on his feet again then held him firmly behind her. James felt confused and hurt by his mother’s words.
The man got a better look at young James, stating, “He looks lik
