WHERE DID THE ANCIENT EGYPTIANS BURY THEIR DEAD?
I n the first part of Egyptian civilization, the Ancient Egyptians buried dead bodies under the ground with no mummification or sarcophagus. The climate for the most part was, and still is, very dry. Because of this, the bodies sometimes stayed fairly well preserved. They were buried in a curled-up position, like a baby is, in the womb, and a few important objects, such as pottery or other goods, were buried with them.

WHAT IS A MASTABA?
T he Egyptians had religious beliefs that were centered around the afterlife. They wanted their bodies to be ready to begin this second life. Eventually, influential Egyptians, such as kings and wealthy individuals, wanted something better after they died. The Egyptians started to build tombs made of mud-bricks.






T hese tombs were called mastabas. The Arabic translation for the word “mastaba” means “bench” and these tombs do look something like

benches. However, these houses for the purpose of burying the dead had a basic problem.




B ecause the bodies weren’t buried in the sand to preserve them, they began to decay. When members of the families returned to the tombs, they were met with rotting flesh. They quickly realized the interior of the mastaba was too moist and would not preserve the dead bodies. They started to look for ways that the bodies could be preserved.
