Description

This poetry collection is the second poetry book written by Beverley Joughin-Robson. There are a variety of poems to suit all tastes and ages. Some poems were written when sitting quietly in idyllic settings, others were written during more passionate or sentimental moments. Some are childish rhymes inspired by children and grandchildren. The last section reflects on the strange and emotive period of time, when we were all affected by the Covid-19 pandemic; Light-hearted comments and poignant reflections, interspersed with emotional and anxious moments. The rhythms, rhyme patterns, language and structure are selected and adapted to suit the various ideas, themes and emotions captured, including sonnets, the writer's favourite form.Although many of the poems are very personal, the intention is to appeal to everyone. The compilation was not intended to be just a collection of poems from the poet's life experiences, but to incorporate poems which engage with others. Reading these poems should be like looking back over old photographs, taking you back to moments in life and arousing forgotten memories.

SEASONAL MOMENTS
Lyme Valley in Autumn
Leaves layered,
Mud-consumed mounds,
Clustered round trees,
Swamping the ground.
Through an archway of gold,
Of bright yellow-green leaves,
Through branches stripped bare,
The dappled sun weaves.
The brilliance, the blueness,
The sharp breath bites,
As the autumnal walkers,
Enjoy its delight.
Sounds stir from the brook,
Grass hidden, ripples past,
Magpies in flight,
or pecking the grass.
Rust coloured shrubs,
Scattered in patches,
Burnt browns and warm oranges,
Colour scheme matches.
Who needs the summer,
When autumn is here,
And this vivid richness,
Fills the air.
Winter Blues Sonnet
Demanding attention with frosted threat,
is winter, outside the door, grim and wet.
We snuggle inside, fire hosting the heat,
Its glowing embers caress slippered feet.
The rain beats constant, from a grey sky,
Its thick veil as light pales and sluggish we lie.
The penetrating black night settles in,
Filling the windowpane with an ink screen.
Sadness seeps in like the damp from the rain,
As dull light filters through the curtain,
The reluctant morning of winter’s domain,
A morbidity resting heavily again.
But a homemade hot toddy, hot roasts and stews,
Give a warmth and delight to our cold winter blues.
A December Morn
A soft glow seeps through the window,
Filtering and resting quietly within.
Welcome warmth, after the crisp dawn,
Melting the ice that has formed.
A blue December glow reaches down,
Through the grey-white clouds that frown,
over glistening icy brooks, so still,
Delighting a calming chill.
Trees, dark and bare, share the skyline,
Dividing fields of hazy greens and brown,
Spotted with woollen white sheep,
That try to keep warm, huddled against
the frosted gown,
covering the hill sides and banks,
as I glance from the train’s window
and give thanks,
for the beautiful image
and warmth of the carriage.

A Snowy Scene (Oil on Canvas)
Snowy Scene
The clear glass stream runs freely,
Dark against the whiteness of the pristine edges,
Sparkled white in the radiance of the sun’s yellow,
Glistening on the feathered white hedges.
Gleaming gold from the sharp, bright sky,
Sweeps across the snowy ground’s sheen,
Disturbed by flecks of mud brown steps,
Which show where people’s feet have been.
The trees stretch up, black against the white,
Shivering downy dust on the serene scene,
Flakes that cling, dissolve, it melts and drops,
Disturbing the smooth, serene sheen.
Small children, energised youth, enthused parents,
Indulge in frosty winter thrills,
Toboggans race over iced hills sliding,
Slipping wildly with excited squeals.
Heaps of snow rounded, snowmen sit heavily,
Scarved and anchored with stones placed steadily,
Snowballs are thrown with abandoned delight,
All adding their magic to this wintery sight
A Visit to Tittesworth Reservoir
The sun emerges from a troubled sky,
As we amble forward along the grassy, winding tail,
With scattered benches to rest passers-by,
As visitors follow a clearly marked man-made trail.
To the expanse of woodland shrubs and trees,
And views that stretch towards majestic peaks,
The path, our guide, the choice is ours to please,
Hidden gems of nature, its secrets keep.
Off the beaten path, footsteps have marked,
A further forest option, where water rests,
Birds are fed and watered here as children larked,
Enjoying nature’s freedom, welcomed guests.
People follow behind, some appear ahead,
Some with dogs or children, scurrying beside,
With eager squeals and laughter, each single tread,
Absorbing each brief moment, with individual eyes.
The alien concrete platform, points the way,
Teetering high above the water’s edge,
The dam, its strong construction on display,
A powerful obstruction, man’s marked ledge.
Nature controlled by guardians of the land,
