Description

A volume of free verse explores faith, love, and societal woes while encouraging believers to build a lasting relationship with God.

Jesus came to show us the way,

How we should live from day to day.

The scriptures said there would be a Messiah,

And saving souls would be his desire.

Anthony Toomer enjoys telling true stories while using poetry as the narrative. In his first volume of poems divided into three parts, he interweaves personal experiences and current events with introspective observations that lead others on a journey through his path through life as an African American man.

Toomer begins with reflections inspired by biblical wisdom and his Christian faith that explore the power of prayer, the never-ending battle between good and evil, and God’s ability to pull us out of the darkness and into the light. In the remaining two sections, Toomer reflects on love, the sanctity of marriage, and the need for justice in the Black community as ignorance continues to plague humanity, even in today’s modern world.

A Poetic Spanking is a volume of free verse that explores faith, love, and societal woes while encouraging believers to build a lasting relationship with God.

About the Author

BOOK 1
Say His Name
Acknowledgments
I was born in Brooklyn Jewish Hospital in 1955, when technology was still akin to science fiction. I was a two-pound preemie, born three months early, and had the nerve to lose a pound. I also had to be revived several times. Coincidentally, my cousin Gail Kennedy was in the incubator next to mine.
I have been told that I was tossed out the window of our burning apartment building as a baby. I have been beaten up by a pastor who mistakenly thought I robbed the church rectory. I have either been accosted, assaulted, or held at gunpoint by the New York Police Department on 6 different occasions. Finally, I have been the victim of several armed robberies, the last one being a home invasion of a friend.
I bring all this up to acknowledge God and Jesus as my Savior and protector. They are my shield and the reason I have nine lives, just like a cat. To God be the glory.
Introduction
It is said that ignorance is bliss.
You can’t miss what you never had.
What you don’t know can’t hurt you.
In life we are all controlled by our circumstances. The circumstance you find yourself in, will move you to make a decision. It may be rash or rational. We all like to think that we have common sense. We also think we have the wisdom to make a wise choice or decision when prompted by those same circumstances.
There are also other factors that come into play. Time is one such factor. How much time do we have to decide? Can we think on it? Is it a rushed decision or just an impulse? We also must consider the consequences of the decision. Do the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa? What are the short- and long-term effects of said decision? Who will be affected by it and in what way?
Now, whether you realize it or not, you are in a circumstance that renders those three sayings above untrue. The circumstance is one concerning Jesus. Do you know him? Some of us do, yet we leave him out. Some of us think we do, and we don’t. And finally, there are those who don’t know diddly about him. No matter which category you fall into, it’s time to get close to him. The life you save will be your soul. Ignorance of the Lord won’t save you. You will miss out on an abundance of blessings. And the gift of eternal life is yours to lose.
The Bible spells it out for you in Ephesians 6:10–17. It’s about the fight that is to come, that we all will face, after our earthly death. It’s best to be prepared because there is nowhere to run. Here is a little eye-opener for you (no pun intended) from Ephesians 6:11: “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” The Word is already blessed. Amen.
A Morning Prayer
Thank you, heavenly Father,
For this new day.
Thank you, heavenly Father,
For hearing what I have to say.
Thank you, heavenly Father,
For letting me see
That a world without you
Isn’t the place for me.
Thank you, thank you
For this beautiful land
That’s fit for the lion and fit for the lamb.
Thank you for being the great I Am.
Thanks for healing our aches and our ills.
Thank you for your heavenly will.
And whether we are deserving or not,
We praise you and thank you for all that we’ve got.
And most of all, Father,
When all is said and done,
You so loved the world
And gave your only begotten Son.
And to all who receive him and believe in his name,
The victory is won.
There will be eternal life
For a job well done.
Today’s Blessing
Hello, sisters and brothers,
Wherever you may stay,
Did you thank God this morning?
For starting you on your way.
For keeping you clothed in your right mind
As you maneuvered through the day,
And for covering you in the blood of the Lamb
While in your bed you lay?
Did you thank him for the use of your limbs?
Your ears, your eyes, your heart
Cause these are the things we take for granted,
Just like our daily start.
So, don’t forget to praise him
For your precious life.
And don’t forget to say the Lord’s Prayer
Each, and every night.
In the Beginning
There once was an angel,
Pretty as could be.
He walked all around heaven,
And God let him be.
Then one day he lost it.
He surely lost his way.
Thought he could compete with God,
Went totally astray.
Oh, get behind me, Satan!
The devil is a lie
Cause Jesus came to save us;
On the cross he would die.
First man up was Adam,
Then God gave him Eve.
He placed them in the garden;
He placed them there to cleave.
He told them to be fruitful.
He told them to multiply.
They begot Cain and Abel,
But Abel later died.
Adam and Eve had another son.
Eve named him Seth.
Adam was then one hundred and thirty years,
And at nine hundred and thirty years,
Adam met his death.
Don’t Lose Your Way
Moses led his people
From under Pharaoh’s hand.
They wandered in the desert
In search of the Promised Land.
He went into the mountains
For forty days and forty nights.
And he returned with God’s words
On how to live right.
He carried two stone tablets,
One in each hand,
And when he saw his people,
He couldn’t understand.
What had happened to them,
While he was away?
It looked as though they had lost their minds,
And they surely had lost their way.
I don’t want to lose my mind,
I don’t want to lose my way,
And that’s why I say my prayers
And praise him every day.
Be sure to teach your children
All about God’s Law,
And make sure they understand
That he is Lord of all.
So, get your life together.
Don’t live your life in vain.
Don’t be a fool like Satan.
Because our Lord will rise again.
First will be the rapture
For the chosen few.
Then the sound that’s oh so clear,
The trumpet blowing through.
Noah
God will use anyone
To put into motion his plans.
