Description

Our hearts force us to trust and try,
Brings music to laughter and tears to cry.
The human heart is a curious thing,
As fragile as a songbird’s wing.
As is the case with Doug's other poetry collections, Angels at Midnight, the fourth installment of poetry, tends to be a collection of “snapshots” of life that most of us can easily relate to. The poetry in Angels at Midnight is easy to understand, and will cause the reader to reflect and to feel.

PROLOGUE
Douglas L. Wilson grew up and has spent much of his life in the small rural Northern Michigan town of Grayling. Doug is a member of the Grayling High School Hall Alumni of Fame, and he is a graduate of Central Michigan University. Doug has recently retired from a forty-five-year career as an educator, youth counselor, and family social worker. Doug and his wife Tracy continue to reside in the Grayling area and they are frequent visitors to Doug’s alma mater in Mount Pleasant.
Wilson is rapidly becoming one of America’s best contemporary poets. A prolific writer, Angels at Midnight is Doug’s fourth collection of poetry to be published. Angels at Midnight focuses on the emotion of love and romantic relationships. The poetry is easy to relate to, and it speaks to the joy and heartache involved in matters of the heart.

A HUMAN HEART IS A CURIOUS THING

A human heart is a curious thing,
As fragile as a songbird’s wing.
It scripts the wishes that one makes,
But like the eggshell, it easily breaks.
A heart seeks out what it needs,
Sorting the flowers from the weeds.
A heart is true to only its voice,
And from emotion make its choice.
A heart is given and never stolen,
It can’t explain what it has chosen.
It is out of faith that the heart cares,
And only time and love repairs.
Our hearts force us to trust and try,
Brings music to laughter and tears to cry.
The human heart is a curious thing,
As fragile as a songbird’s wing.

ON THE SOFT WINGS OF THE NIGHT

The evening breeze sighs gently,
The heavens are shining bright,
And I am coming to my love,
On the soft wings of the night.
It has taken me some time,
But I’ve learned how to fly.
We may be star crossed lovers,
But I’m not afraid to try.
I heard you sweetly whisper,
My heart has taken flight.
And I am coming to my love,
On the soft wings of the night.
I’m traveling on the wind,
Against the odds you wait.
When the moon draws the tide,
Is this destiny or fate?
Soon the coming dawn shall break,
I’m racing against the first light.
I am coming to you my love,
On the soft wings of the night.

PATTY JANE: MY FIRST EVERYTHING
THE GRAPES OF BLUE

Those grapes of blue,
That tempt like you,
They grow wild upon the vine,
Indeed, they make the sweetest wine.
But in the early quiet spring,
About the vineyards birds do sing.
“Don’t be fooled by color nor shape,
Of the early vinegar-tasting grape.”
“Beware those passing, not to swipe,
One grape of blue, not yet ripe.”
Indeed, it is with grapes of blue,
And indeed it applies to me and you.
For Patty Jane, 1967
WONDERING (ON LOVE)

Might I dare to chance the brush,
To watch your virgin face turn blush,
Or better trust you, do what you could,
Ask you into the darkening wood?
Beseech you for one more kiss,
Accept your wrath with gallant bliss.
Nor either, but stand here head hung low,
A fool to ask, afraid to know.
While all the time I feel your gaze,
Upon my fevered cheeks it stays.
I feel your breath with every kiss,
Relive with you each moment missed/
Which never lived except in my mind.
I pray my lady for some sign,
That you would let whatever be,
Give your love before God and me.
Forbid hasting this moment by,
But cherish it not let it die,
To one another we shall yield together.
Making this moment last forever.
Two hearts forged in passionate love,
Pledged, and judged by God Above.
For Patty Jane, 1968
ONLY IN DREAMS

To be with you, I ask no more,
Hand in hand along the shore.
Only a path that we might walk,
Pausing only to kiss and talk.
Two marionettes without their strings,
Together we may have noticed things.
Long green reeds with ebony spools,
Waving from their tranquil pools.
A blackbird with painted wings,
The paper birch from where it sings.
But together in the rippling grass,
We press to make the moment last.
A mystery left without a plot,
A tide of emotion we can’t stop.
Know every shape and every curve,
Feel every touch and every
