Description

Have you ever been punched by a cabbage, or fallen head first down the loo? Have you ever had fun with a poem? You haven't? Then this book's for you. 'Steve Turner's first collection of verse for children is full of quirky humour and strong rhymes to read aloud' Children and quite a few adults will enjoy the poems in this collection. Pollution, religion, growing up and families are just some of the topics the author uses for this amusing anthology. I rate this collection as good as those by Roger McGough and Brian Patten." Hull Daily Mail 'Full of quirky humour and strong rhymes that kids adore.' Brian Patten 'Steve Turner is one of the most original and child-friendly voices to emerge in the last few years.' Sunday Telegraph 'Highly observant, often poignant, sometimes naughty and always fresh and funny.' Nick Park, creator of Wallace and Gromit 'This hilarious collection of poems will make you laugh out loud.' The Young Telegraph

I Like Words
First Word
The first word I said was ‘gaagaa’,
Which was shortly followed by ‘goo’,
And then I stuck them together
To see what a sentence would do.
My Mother was really impressed.
She said, ‘Who’s a googoo booboo?’
Quick as a flash I responded,
‘Oo-gaagaa agoogoo googoo’.
I Like Words
I like words.
Do you like words?
Words aren’t hard to find:
Words on walls and words in books,
Words deep in your mind.
Words in jokes
That make you laugh,
Words that seem to smell.
Words that end up inside out,
Words you cannot spell.
Words that fly
And words that crawl,
Words that screech and bump.
Words that glide and words that swing,
Words that bounce and jump.
Words that paint
And words that draw,
Words that make you grin.
Words that make you shake and sweat,
Words that touch your skin.

Words of love
That keep you warm,
Words that make you glad.
Words that hit you, words that hurt,
Words that make you sad.
Words in French
And words in slang,
Words like ‘guy’ and ‘dude’,
Words you make up, words you steal,
Words they say are rude.
I like words.
Do you like words?
Words come out and play.
Words are free and words are friends,
Words are great to say.
Language
Dogs bark
Mice squeak
Cats purr
I speak.

Wriggle
Wriggle is a wriggly word.
It runs down from its wrig
Then squiggles on its iggle
And ligs back to its igg.
Wouldn’t It Be Funny?
Wouldn’t it be funny
if a clock said moo
and a cow when it was
tickled said tick?
Wouldn’t it be funny
if a tongue went sniff
and a nose when it was
runny went lick?
Wouldn’t it be funny
if bombs went wobble
while a jelly on a
trolley went bang?
Wouldn’t it be funny
if a bell went bounce
but a ball if it should
fall went clang?
Wouldn’t it be funny
if a crisp went fizz
while the cola in a
bottle went crack?
