DEDICATION
I would like to give thanks to the team at Balboa Press whose encouragement and support has been so appreciated. Thanks, must be given to those classmates at Kawerau College who influenced me, as we debated the artistic merits of the greats, Shakespeare, Mansfield, Atkinson, Curtis & Elton. You know who you are! Most artists have a muse in their lives. One I had is my former girlfriend, Celina Seeto, who deserves my heartfelt thanks. Being with her was one of the great privileges of my life. There are friends who’ve supported me in amazing ways, from a pat on the back, to simply listening to me. I am a lucky man.
Thank you to all my relations who are in the UK, I love you all and will be glad when I can travel to the UK once more. To my sister, Vanessa Hales and brother-in-law, Patrick Hales, I know it is difficult to be a good family when there are many miles in between us. I love you guys and think about you often. My nieces and nephew. Seeing you all from birth, grow into wonderful adults is something I cherish dearly, and I am truly proud to be your uncle. My late father Jack was a quiet, yet strong man, clever, logical, funny, charming and hansom, I miss him dearly. His influence is in the lines that follow, thanks dad. After he died, my mam she said she was lonely, I was unsure what to do. Then one day Dr Duncan France met my mum and soon they married. To Duncan I give my deepest thanks, as he’s taken very good care of my mum. He is different to my dad, but he like my dad did, loves my mum and has filled her life with new experiences, travel, wonderful companionship and love. He’s encouraged me to print the poems that follow. Like all adoptees, I have two mums. One who gave birth to me whom I give thanks and my love to, wherever you may be.
My other mum, (my mam), I have always been very close to. When I started writing, I was often encouraged to publish by my mam, so much that I thought perhaps she was biased? Her love and Yorkshire persistence made me realise I should put them to print. You would not be reading this without her love and encouragement.
Therefore, these poems are dedicated to my mam, Teri whom I love with all my heart.
AN ODE TO MY MOTHER
The sun shines fair and strong, bright on this Autumn Day
I cannot go to the park or cinema, I must make my own way
In my house I spend time, reading books through which I learn
Meditations by Aurelius, simply does not stop my mind’s return
To my mum, my lovely, the single closest constant in all my life
For her guiding hand, I owe much, for helping me through the strife
My mind is a product of biology, and her generosity, love and kindness
Deftly, she made my world clear, by so doing banished my blindness
