Skylark Poetry International proudly presents May Lene Reodique as the 2023 1 st place contest winner, with the poem, “Loving You Is a Sin.” Born and raised in Albay, Philippines, she has a Bachelor of Science degree in Fishery Education from one of the prestigious universities in the Philippines, Laguna State Polytechnic University, Los Banos Campus. I am glad to be able to recognize May Lene for her outstanding talent and contribution to poetry.
Writing poems is one of her hobbies. She writes everything that comes to her mind and is the founder of two online literary groups, Literary Creations and Sanctuary of Poets & Poems. May Lene can be followed on her Wattpad account, sexysweetangel23.
Skylark Poetry International (SPI) is a Facebook group where poets share their creative talents in a positive and supportive fashion. As one of the administrators of SPI, I embrace the global effort to promote the art of poetry. As the founder, Abu Forhad says, “We support every constructive poetic initiative.”
Loving You Is a Sin
By May Lene Reodique
They say, loving you is a sin.
Because you are no longer free.
You belong to someone else,
And to invade your private life,
I don’t have any rights.
They say, loving you is a sin.
And they call me a criminal.
Because I was found guilty.
I have sinned since the day I loved you.
So let them call me names.
I don’t care.
The only thing I know is
I’m happy when I’m with you.
So can they blame me?
If I can’t deny the sweetness of your lips,
Every time you kiss me?
And I can’t stop falling into your arms,
Every time you touch me?!
Green Dress
Baby breath and crystals form a headpiece
to adorn my long braided hair.
I stand in an a-line white wedding gown
holding a peony rose bouquet.
The white aisle runner leads the path to
unending love.
My first dance is to the song, “Perfect Duet”
by Ed Sheeran.
Then the night ends with a taste of the three tier, lemon-strawberry cake frosted white
and trimmed with a metallic silver lining.
I imagined myself as a model in a wedding magazine while waiting at the courthouse.
This hand-me-down green dress will have to suffice for my nuptials.
My Friend
I don’t remember you
among the broken glass and
bullet casings
scattered across the
black and white marble floor.
I don’t recall you
amidst the faces covered by
white sheets stained with blood
that no longer flows -
stagnant and lifeless.
My friend,
your remnants are amongst
the lost and found.
But not you.
A diamond studded earring,
frail gold chain,
