About the Author
Dedication
To Ron. I wish that you could have stayed with us so much longer.
To my family and friends who have offered love and encouragement through the years.
And to You, Jesus, for Your honor, glory, and purposes.
March 23, 2020
I’ve watched you, old oak tree, every day for years now.
You’ve been a faithful harbinger of the coming season.
And today, while the world is roiling in chaos and shuddering in fear,
I noticed the tiny buds of new life springing up on your branches.
You’re a hopeful old beast, oak tree.
Deep in your DNA, your Creator designed you for many purposes, many of which I know nothing.
But today, your purpose of reminding me that new life is near is really what I need.
March 27, 2020
So many moments of isolation
They break sometimes toward despair
And yet this hope is so certain
I’m loved beyond compare
Silence all the voices, Lord
That tell me that I am alone
That shake my faith, stir up my fear,
And rattle all the strength that I’ve known
For I am a woman of faith, I know
And a daughter of God by grace
I should stand tall in what I know
And courageously get on my race
And yet here I am, bowed low by cares,
Wondering when the return of the norm
But looking around and thinking not soon
As we weather the days of this storm
If You’re still God and still on Your throne
Every promise that You’ve made is true
I just must decide deep in my heart
To believe and place trust in You
I’m aware that Your grace sustains me
As I swim these unchartered seas
You never condemn me for quaking in fear
In the face of this awful disease
But the strains of that old childhood song
Soon float around to calm my fear
“Jesus loves me, this I know,”
And remind me that You are near
March 29, 2020
Yellow and green
Signs of Spring to be seen

Crazy rain storms
Fat, lazy worms

Sweetly-scented breeze
Blowing through the trees

A bevy of flowers
Dancing in showers

Hearing robins sing
Or them being on the wing

The giggles of a child
Watching their antics wild

Foals in the field
Crops planted to yield

Oh, look and see
All the joys that be!
March 30, 2020
What is it that I fear then,
If not death itself?
Is it the sickness or the solitude of suffering,
The discomfort or the pain?

Is it the changing of my days, my life,
Or is it the dread of the great unknown?
And having to surrender my control
Finally and forever to You?

I think that it is all of the above
And more, for which I have no words.
Today requires more faith than I’ve ever needed prior.
I must use that which I cannot see
To sail these uncharted churning seas.

The dread weighs heavy on my heart,
Knowing that there is no way but through.
Dare I be reminded of Your garden time,
When You must have felt like this too.

For the joy set before You,
You bore the horror and the loss,
The unspeakable pain and suffering
When Your royal throne became a cross.

I can take comfort knowing that You know
More of the grief than I’ll ever bear,
That I don’t stand alone and never will,
That all my joy and sorrow, You share.
March 31, 2020
It’s such a gift this gift of hope
It stays the grief
The knot at the end of my rope

It can’t be seen it can only be known
But it lives deep within
Where it is mine to own

You bestow so much, so many gifts
From Your heart to mine
And hope is one that lifts

So, thank You, Lord, for providing again
Just what I needed
Blessed stillness in the roar of this din

How enduring is God’s loyal love;
The Eternal has inexhaustible compassion.
Here they are, every morning, new!
Your Faithfulness, God, is as broad
As the day.
Have courage, for the Eternal is
All that I will need.
My soul boasts, “Hope in God; just wait.”
Lamentations 3:22–24 (The Voice)
April 1, 2020
Jeremiah, the weeping prophet,
His words are broken and sad
And yet right there in the middle
Are words that make me glad

Take your eyes off the external
It’s always been subject to change
Set your thoughts on the eternal
It’s more than a fair exchange
April 2, 2020
I’m looking for the rainbow
In this ceaseless sky of gray
Yearning, longing, hoping
For a soon-coming brighter day

Mulling on Your promises
Through days of sadness and pain
Wondering if joy will hold fast
Through the downpour of rain

Patience may be a virtue
Of which I’m oft short of supply
Help me keep my eyes toward Heaven
For Your rainbow in the sky
April 3, 2020
It’s hard to know You’re standing there
When I feel so all alone
Where’s the laughter and the joy
The peace that I would own

You said You’d never leave me
Yet Your presence seems a loss
Where are You, Lord Almighty
Life without You is simply dross

Man’s words cannot soothe my heart
I need a word from You
Silence and still the turmoil
Refresh my soul anew

Only then will my vision clear
And You once again I see
Exactly just how near You are
Standing right next to me
April 4, 2020
Do we have the sunshine, Lord
To remember in the rain
Do we have the ache-free days
To remember in the pain

Do we have great days of joy
To remember in the sad
Do we have sweet times of good
To remember in the bad

Do we have the flowers, Lord
To remember in the snow
Do we have great days of trust
To remember when we don’t know

Do we have great days of peace
To remember in times of stress
Do we have days of triumph, Lord
