Poems for Children and the Young at H eart

The Snow Leopards and the Snowy Owl
Her eyes pristine are sparkling bright,
and gleam like shiny rivers flow,
in the forest deep at night,
in the velvet night they glow.
This snowy leopard, ladylike,
in careful, cautious steps she climbs,
through the pine trees and the brush,
slowly, neatly, but at times,
she waits and listens anxiously
for her cubs, their purring near,
along the rocky, snow-filled ledges,
under skies deep dark but clear.
Having wandered far away,
their voices mingle with the sounds
from forest deep and rivers wide,
from snowy owls, their calls profound.
But then among thick, lonesome pines,
she spots them huddled, just below,
a branch where sits a snowy owl,
her feathers white as new-born snow.
Her duty done, she takes to flight,
white wings with speckled gray-black tints,
she disappears into the night,
in the snow small leopard prints.

The Llama Named Lorraine
Her name was Lorraine
and she lived on a train
that travelled from town to town.
The caboose was her home
where she curtsied and roamed
dressed in her red evening gown.
On top of her head
was a feathered beret.
A rainbow of colors it was.
Her smile was meek.
Her boots were sleek,
and covered with reddish-brown fuzz.
The train headed west,
the sun almost set,
the day now turning to night.
She stamped her hoofs loudly,
and smiled rather proudly,
the trees disappearing from sight.
Into the tunnel the train slowly chugged,
black smoke disappearing from view.
It wasn’t too long
that she broke out in song,
as the train rolled back into view.
Her gown was now green, instead of deep red,
with a long emerald feather on top of her head.
She whistled and sang at the top of her voice.
A thick emerald belt completed her choice,
along with bright lipstick, a deep forest green,
her smile glowing brightly, a deep emerald sheen.
