A Woman of AFairs
CHAPTER ONE
After nearly two months in Accra, Akua began to understand the new world of business into which she had been thrust. Her next piece of knowledge was that it was a strange world which demanded new approaches and tact but it was not a changeless world and with some eort, she could carve for herself the change that she desired. But she also found out that other forms of behaviour were attached to it — bribery and corruption in several places. For instance, she was surprised that the Manager at the Textile shop had frowned when she said she was Mrs. Krobea Adansi but smiled when she said her husband had been killed in an accident and that was why she decided to work. “In his life time, he did not want me to work,” she had said, “and manager, will you believe that for the past three months, I have been in this city, no man has talked to me, let alone visited me.Hmm, Mahu amane oo!” she told

the Textile Manager. He raised his head to look at her face. Akua turned the left cheek so that he could see the dimples as she smiled. “This is a very busy place and honestly, I have very little time to discuss your case. Is there any place we could meet?” the manager asked. “Oh, Manager…” “Call me Akwasi…Amankwaa.” “Hm Mr. Akwasi…” “No, just Akwasi…” “Yes. Well, as I was saying, I can’t înd my way through Accra. You know, I only know my way from my shop to my house.” “Oh, poor you. You tell me where I can înd you.” “I live some where in Kokomlemle near the Technical School. You know Ɛbɛyɛ Yie Chop Bar? Just behind it.” “The name gives you the exact promise you need. Ɛbɛ yɛ Yieindeed. Make it seven tonight.” “Where should I wait? Why not come home? I shall leave instructions with the maid. What

will you drink?” “Beer.” “I shall keep it cool.” The Manager who was delighted with this meeting thought he was threading a foot path little did he know that he was setting o on a fast lane highway. For the woman was no stranger either to Accra or anywhere else in the country and she could swallow him much more quicker than Jonah went through the throat of the whale. Poor Amankwaa was not worldly-wise. For the woman he had îrst encountered was well-versed in the ways of the world. She wore tasteful clothes, the ones whose designs bespoke quality cherished by ancient Ashanti royalty. Which meant that such an owner had been around for sometime and was by no means young or inexperienced. But his kind knew only shirts and trousers with the occasional neck tie and although he had started dealing in textiles, his experiences only covered designs, colours and shades and occasional changes in prices.
