Egypt And Beyond
CHAPTER 1
It was a perfect day outside. I woke up remembering that today I was traveling to Egypt to meet with Professor Lambert. I had been invited to an archeological dig with him for historical artifacts in Egypt. This was what I had been waiting for my entire life.
Gloria started packing her suitcase for her trip, the Telephone rang. She picked it up with a cheerful hello. The Mardi Gras was on this week; her sister wanted to know why she had picked that week to go overseas. She told her it was just bad timing; she would have to survive this one without her. Her sister was frantic, “but you’re always there with me, helping me get ready for it and then helping me get over it afterwards, why have you abandoned me this time, you’ve been talking to Mum haven’t you.” “No, I haven’t spoken to Mum and anyway she doesn’t care if you’re in the Mardi Gras or not, it’s Philip you have to worry about, you freak him out as it is with your new acquired lifestyle, have you resolved that part of your life with him yet.”
The phone went quiet at the other end. Gloria asked, “are you still there Simone,” Gloria heard a huge sigh at the other end of the phone, “how many times do I have to tell you, it’s Simon, not Simone, why do you insist on calling me by that name.” “Because Simone is what you were called for most of our lives together and it’s a habit that is hard to break,” said Gloria. “Enough Gloria! So, you’re still going to Egypt no matter what I say.”
“Damned right I am, I may never get another chance at this, and the Mardi Gras will be here again next year, it’s just one year without me, I think you can cope.” The phone went dead and Gloria had enough to think about so she replaced the receiver and continued with her packing.
She rang her Mum and Dad saying her goodbyes and jumped in a cab for the airport. While in the back of the cab she went through all her documents checking to see that she had not forgotten anything, Passport, Flight tickets, address of Hotel in Cairo and some Egyptian money. She also had a copy of the tomb layout which Professor Lambert had emailed to her. She was all set.
She sat back on the plane and tried to calm her nerves. It looked like there was a vacant seat next to her, which was good if she needed to stretch out later as the flight would take around 11 hours. She put her head back and closed her eyes; concentrated on sitting in her peaceful garden under the sun until the nervous tension subsided. She opened her eyes and the plane was still on the ground, she asked one of the flight attendants what the hold up was and she was told they were waiting on some business class passenger to arrive. So, she closed her eyes once again and sunk into her non-stress area in her head.
Her mind wandered down memory lane where she remembered her sister Simone telling her that she was strange, no one has a secret garden in their head to disappear into, that idea was even stranger than her thinking she was a man inside. Gloria smiled and continued her descent into her secret garden.
She woke to noises on the plane and looked around. No one was in the seat next to her and they were well and truly airborne. Good, she thought to herself, I can relax and stretch out. She was just getting settled when the flight attendant said, “I’m sorry, but we have to give this seat to a passenger from Business Class. Gloria smiled and said, “of course, meaning, damn what a bother.” She got herself settled and waited for her fellow passenger to arrive. After about 5 minutes a man arrived and sat next to her. He started arranging himself, putting his computer on his table and setting paperwork in a folder on his lap, wriggling around and eventually settling down and typing furiously with his specs balanced in the middle of his nose.
Gloria thought, how strange some people can be; not even a ‘sorry for the upheaval or I beg your pardon’ just sit; cause havoc and continue as if no one else was around. She took out her map of the tomb and began to study it. She was wandering down each passageway on the map in her head when her companion sitting next to her nudged her elbow. She turned looking directly into blue/green fish-like eyes and her companion asked, “going to Cairo to do some exploring are we?” Gloria nodded her head. Her companion thrust his hand into hers and said,” by the way I’m Carl Brigshaw and I apologize for the inconvenience caused by me being seated here”. Gloria smiled and was about to say, no inconvenience; when Carl Brigshaw continued with, “the woman sitting next to me went into labor and they needed all the room they could get so I said I would sit in Economy if there was a spare seat and here I am”. Gloria smiled and said. “No problem, and yes I will be exploring in Cairo”. Carl Brigshaw pointed to the layout on Gloria’s table and said. “Those maps do a good job of sucking in unsuspected tourists but he told her that they are nothing like the real thing.” Gloria was about to reply when the Flight attendant was standing next to them and informed them that dinner was here. Mr Brigshaw took hold of the tray and said, “thank God, I’m famished.” and started delving into the tray even before Gloria had sighted hers.
Gloria thought about Mr Brigshaw while consuming her dinner thinking he was not really rude but he could do with some brushing up of his social skills, manners etc. After they had finished dinner, Mr Brigshaw settled himself down for a nap and within 5 minutes of him falling asleep he began to snore. Gloria watched him while he slept and concluded that he must be a bachelor as he was well dressed but his shirt was lacking proper pressing. His hair was dark in color, parted to the side and then swept back with little or no hair gel in it. His skin was rather tanned and there were a few wrinkles around his eyes but she would say that he was in his early thirties. It also looked like he had a mustache as recently as a couple of days ago as above his upper lip was rather pale compared to the rest of his face. His hands were the hands of a worker but not a laborer. His nails were short and manicured. From what she could see he looked around average height and of strong build, not fat, but not slim either. She was so busy sizing him up that she did not notice that he had opened his eyes and was watching her watching him. He smiled and said, “Found anything interesting yet”. Gloria smiled back and said, “No not really”, while rising to stretch her legs. She could feel his gaze follow her down the aisle before she reached the end of the plane so she turned and glanced over her shoulder but Mr Brigshaw was no longer in his seat and she breathed a sigh of relief.
Gloria was back in her seat when Mr Brigshaw returned, he glanced over at her and said, “We have a new baby boy in there, the things those Flight attendants have to do for a quid, it’s unbelievable.” A chuckle followed his remark and he continued,” wonder if they’ll charge the parents for an extra seat on the plane”. Gloria still felt a bit awkward about being caught checking him out and only smiled and then put her head down to the magazine in front of her. He asked if this was her first trip to Cairo, Gloria nodded her head and he continued, “be careful, don’t eat anything you’re not used to seeing back home and never carry you bag just resting on your shoulder always wear it close to you, never trust the shop owners; they just love to pull a trick or two on the tourist and whatever you do, don’t go out late at night on your own, there are thieves around every corner waiting to jump on you when you least expect it.” Gloria found this amusing, she had just met this man and he was acting like an older brother, she nodded her head and said, “Well Mr Brigshaw, I can take care of myself and where I’m going there will be no thieves or shop owners”. Carl Brigshaw was swallowing the last of his drink when there was an announcement made that the weather in Cairo was a warm thirty degrees and humid.
Gloria turned to continue her conversation with Mr Brigshaw who was now standing up looking down at her and said, “well it’s been pleasant, but I must go and organize things in business class for the arrival at the Airport” and with a wave of his hand he disappeared
