Chapter 1
THE MEETING
Pete Bennington lives on northwest eighths Street, Redmond, Oregon, and is a 35-year-old man with short light brown hair. He pulled $400 from his tattered jeans, looked at it and said, “There’s just enough money to buy some food for a week or two.” he spotted a virtual reality system and decided to spend his money on it, then ordered a couple of grinders from the nearest subway. At home, Pete was anxious to try his new virtual reality system. But dropped it on the tile kitchen floor. He picked it up, muttering, “That’s just like me, I get something that I enjoy, and I go and break it. I might as well return what’s left to the store and get my money back.”
But something inside Pete told him to install the system and try it out. Some three hours later, the virtual reality system was up and running. Pete put on the goggles, designed his Avatar to look like a cowboy, and entered a destination South Pacific Island as Westerman. He sat in a comfortable beach chair and looked at the other empty five chairs, then at the white sand and pounding surf. A cute woman with long blonde hair, with a great-looking figure clad in a red lace bikini appeared in the chair across from him. He read the name, Flea-Flicker, above her head and thought, “I am gonna enjoy this virtual reality system .” He thought he’d be cute and asked, “So, how many fleas have you flipped today?”
“Hi, I live just outside of Birmingham, Alabama, and I bought my virtual reality system last week, and I enjoy meeting people all over the world. I stopped at a destination called the lounge yesterday and looked at myself sitting in the chair across from me. Then a heavyset man with a black face, white features, and white hair appeared in the same chair I was sitting in. At that point, I was totally weirded out and left the room because a strange man was sitting on my lap. I shut off my visor for a few days, trying to comprehend what had happened to me in that room. Oh, do you have the program Hangout on your iPhone? If so, we can meet there and Chat.”
“Talking to people in this virtual reality world is fine with me. We can chat on the beach or go to one of the two dozen destinations and have a private chat.”
Flicker promptly left.
Then two people entered, a shy woman clad in yellow shorts and a top with red hair who called herself Texas-star, from Houston, Texas, and a man dressed in pale green pants and a redshirt. He called himself, Hothead from Montana. He monopolized the conversation for a good hour in twenty-two minutes, talking about everything from his ailing tabby cat to the flowers that wouldn’t grow in his backyard.
Texas-Star sent Pete a text saying, meet me in a destination called, The Park.
At the destination, Pete studied the lush trees, the colorful flowers, and the rich green grass as he sat on a tree stump facing Texas-Star. She stated, “Did you know this park is a virtual reality of Yellowstone?”
“No, I didn’t. Are all the destinations in the head visor copies of real places around the world.”
“Yes. and what makes this virtual reality system so cool is you can visit places in the virtual world that you couldn’t afford to go in the real world. Enough about that, what do you do for a living?”
“I live in Redmond, Oregon, and I’m a freelance photographer. I bought my system today, and I’m astounded at this virtual world.”
Every day for hours, Pete enjoyed the virtual reality world and ignored the small red dot in the lower left-hand corner of his visor that said, “Touch here to enter.”
One day, a curious Pete pressed the red dot. A wave of dizziness swept over him, and everything went dark gray. Pete opened his eyes and found himself standing on the beach of the very island he met Star. He reached down, picked up the sand, touched one of the palm trees, and then stated, “This is real; I’m actually on a desert island. But how? One can’t travel through a virtual reality system to a real place; it doesn’t work that way. But yet here I am. For the next hour, Pete swam in the pounding surf and found a wet soggy envelope with $3500. He looked up, and they were sitting in a chair was his Avatar. Pete sat in the chair with the money in his hand, thinking it was all just a dream. But when Pete came to, he was sitting on his gray couch in the living room, the soggy envelope with the money in it was in his hand. He stared at it in unbelief for 15 minutes trying to comprehend what had happened. Pete put the goggles back on and joined a group on the same island. One man was a tall, scruffy looking individual with black bunny ears on his head with a deep voice. The woman on his right looked like a skeleton with the skin pulled over it, with long red hair wearing black pants and a red short-sleeved top. On Pete’s left was Texas-Star, dressed in light blue shorts and a white top. She asked, “Do you wanna go to a private destination so we can talk?”
“Sure, why not.”
The little red dot in the lower left-hand corner of Pete’s visor appeared. He reached towards the woman and said, “Take my hand.”
A baffled Texas Star stated, “How can I? This is a virtual reality system, and my hand will pass r
