Description

The everyday courtesies towards strangers that pause sometimes for lunch or other needs in their travels.
The brilliance of a lone white horse grazing on a hillside pasture of lush green grass dotted with scarlet sumac. And like the horse; I too would be alone, (without the light of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ), amid the bountiful beauty of the land.
With each new twist in the molding of life, lamplighters gently guide others through crossroads and obstacles, while providing hope at every turn.
In a six-decade cultural collection of campfire tales and gatherings around winter’s wood stoves, and fishing and hunting campfires while working at a farm and in barnyard lots, Albert Allen shares an inspiring and sometimes amusing glimpse into the goodness and kindness that permeates the peacefulness of Southeast Missouri's Carter County. Within short stories presented in alphabetical order, Allen casts a spotlight on the heartbreaks and sorrows that include accidental tragedies and the loss of community family members, and the poignant moments that include the beauty of nature and its creatures, the outpouring of kindheartedness toward the misfortunate, and the passionate prayer requests raised to God, the Heavenly Father.
Life’s Lamplighters is a volume of short tales that reflect on love, goodness, faith, hope, and all the gifts nature and life provides for the blessed residents of Southeast Missouri.

To life’s lamplighters, who helped guide me through life’s crossroads, where we laughed, cried, and sometimes cringed with each new twist in the molding of life.

ACORNS
The acorns fall from the white oak tree, green as can be, and now lie upon the cold ground with red, brown, black, and yellow spots. The colorful acorns, the staff of life, will see the wildlife through winter’s cold and snow. The deer will paw, the turkeys will scratch, and the squirrels will dig to find hidden beneath the snow the colorful acorns, which now lie a ripened brown.

ADMIRATION
The day our son was born, we thanked God and asked for guidance in his journey to manhood—first, his graduation from college, then a master’s degree as a specialist, and later, a doctorate in education. We stood in awe of his opportunity as a teacher to serve humanity. Eight years later, his sister, with flaming red hair, joined our family, and we asked for guidance along her journey to womanhood—first, her graduation from college, then a master’s degree in business education, and we stood in awe of her opportunity as a teacher to serve humanity.
God has stirred our mortal minds with love for our children, yet within our carnal minds, we cannot imagine the love and joy the day God watched from on high the birth of His Son and His journey to manhood. Rising from the baptism in the Jordan River, following His graduation from parental studies, He too became earth’s most astounding teacher. And in jubilance, God proclaims to all humanity, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”

ADVERSARY
I recall the morning’s twilight of my youth and the dagger that plunged deep inside the chest of my adversary, gushing hot, red, sticky blood. With evening’s twilight fading, my lips forever silent, and with the closing of my grave, my love will forever remain unaware of my adversary’s adversary.

AFTERNOON TEA
My afternoon teacup is large, filled with the pungent dark brew, now colored caramel, swirled
