Melody Larkin gazed out into a sea of freshly scrubbed faces. A knot was forming in the pit of her stomach. What in the world ever made you think you could teach school? The petite woman chided herself. The pretty, young schoolteacher squared her small shoulders as if preparing to tackle the world’s largest football team.
“All right children.” Melody’s soft voice could not be heard above the noise in the back of the room. Trying again she put all of the effort she could muster into the musical voice that many a person had been hypnotized by.
“You! In the back row, what is your name?” Melody looked squarely at a tall muscular boy. He was probably a foot taller than her and was starting to fill into manhood. His broad shoulders strained at the cotton fabric of his shirt. Large muscular arms flexed as he cracked his knuckles in his thick hands. He was a good liking man-child, a little bit old for the eighth grade, but this was not uncommon in a rural one-room school house. A lot of parents kept their boys out during planting and harvest season, causing them to fall behind in school. This was acceptable, for it was the livelihood of the rural areas in 1950’s America. Melody’s heart skipped a beat at the angry look on the boys’ face. He looked as if he hated the world.
“My name is John Brown and if you ask me again I’ll knock you down.” The student snickered at his own cleverness.
“Well John Brown you may come to the front of the classroom and complete your threat or be seated.” Melody’s voice had changed to a tone of pure ice. She had a demure manner and was very proper most of the time, but when provoked her temper could be as violent and as sudden as the storms that swept across the prairie. The room went as silent as a tomb, every student watched wide-eyed as the tall lad swaggered to the front of the room towards the awaiting grimfaced teacher.
Melody was standing behind a huge oak desk. The knuckles on her right hand were almost white as she braced herself for whatever was coming. No one could see her shapely legs trembling. Just as the bully arrived to stand in front of Melody, she pulled her hand out of a drawer in the desk. The boys’ eyes popped wide open in shock, in his teacher’s creamy, smooth, dainty hand, sat the largest, ugliest, toad he had ever seen. Its long, green and yellow legs looked as if they were ready to leap from her outstretched hand at him at any moment. It was hideous, wet and wort covered. Gigantic yellow-green eyes bulged out of its ugly head. The thing glared at the school bully, daring him to come closer to the schoolteacher. Dark, slimy skin rose and fell on its throat, an evil smile on the creatures’ mouth widened. Opening its’ large orifice a loud croak erupted from a yellow throat. The boy jumped back falling over a wastebasket beside the desk. He tried to catch himself, and with flailing arms, crashed backward onto the wooden floor. Looking up in fear, he waited for the teacher to release the monster onto him. Surprised, he watched as she put the toad back in the drawer, and extended her hand to help him up. Hesitantly he took her small soft hand into his large calloused one. With admirable strength she pulled him up from his sprawled position on the floor. Melody smiled up at him, “George is our science project. We are going to make a natural habitat for him, until then he will remain in my drawer.
