Description

He exited the bleach-filled odor of the hospital with Gail pushing his wheelchair. He was wheeled out into the sunshine. It put a smile on his face. He sat there, wondering how they were going to transport him home, when out of the corner of his eye he spotted the old step van which he had driven when working for the shoe company. He began laughing when it came to a stop in front of him and he jumped out the back with a ramp and set it in place.

Introduction by A. G. Harrison

Introduction

From the time human felt the necessity to communicate, he realized the value of the written word and wrote by drawing on cave walls, clay tablets, stones, papyrus, parchment, paper, and today, with the development of technology, he has created e-books.

The object "book" is classified in industrial products, but at the same time it is a cultural good. Personally, I emphasize both of its dimensions, but mainly in its cultural dimension. I consider the book to be the most important expression of culture because quite simply, in addition to being the same work of art, it supports all other expressions of culture.

As an industrial product, through the many stages of its creation and before it reaches the hands of the reader, it financially supports a wide range of professions, such as writers, philologists, translators, designers, publishers, paper merchants, printing houses, bookbinders, distributors and, finally, bookstores… Let us not forget, of course, that today it also greatly supports the huge online market industry.

The governments of many countries, studying and delving into the economic benefits of the book, have invested and supported this industry in various ways, which flourished and offered them great financial gains.

Starting with the Sumerians, Babylonians and other peoples of Mesopotamia, who wrote on clay tablets, Egyptians and Romans, who wrote on papyrus, the Jews on parchment, the evolution with handwritten books images in the Middle Ages in Europe, the creation of the first wooden typographic elements and paper by the Chinese, who printed the first books, the discovery of metallic elements by the German Johannes Gutenberg during the Renaissance and the really rapid development of printing in 1450 until 1456 and, finally, during the 19th-20th century the Industrial Revolution, which makes the production of the book flourish are some examples of the value of the written word.

The agony and effort of all these civilized societies, over time, in various parts of the world, teaches us that the book is an integral part of human existence.

Throughout this course the book records and transports from the depths of the centuries ancient civilizations, which teach us about the mistakes that we can avoid or imitate the achievements of our ancestors and adopt timeless principles and values, supplies for survival. but also the evolution of the human species.

By reading a book, we have the opportunity to create with our imagination the heroes of history, landscapes, various objects, etc. In the pages of a book, the author, in addition to his study, research, experiences, also expresses his feelings. He makes us members of his own world and gives us the opportunity to learn.

It helps us to acquire knowledge but also to enrich our vocabulary, improving our own writing.

It contributes to our mental alertness, increases the ability to focus, improves our memory, helps to develop our analytical mental abilities, entertains us, calms us down and helps reduce stress.

Of course, apart from the importance of touch and contact with a hot material, reading a quality book contributes significantly and decisively to our self-education, the cultivation of critical thinking, the upgrading of our aesthetics and consequently contributes to our quality of life.

It conveys art, informs, cultivates the spirit and the soul, elevates intelligence, finds solutions to problems, conveys messages, circulates ideas, forms consciences.

I hope my books convey a message of personal experiences and you could find segments of your own truth as well.

Thank you in advance for being here and being ready to start reading.

Celebratory galas in Washington D.C. were many, but Chicago had its own fine events, such as Trok’s Christmas Party “slash” Engagement Party. Gail had managed to plan a very nice catered affair at a hotel with a huge dance floor. Most of Trok employees in the area put in an appearance, as did Brian and wife, and Rose from St. Louis, and a dozen other people from the east coast.

Charlie escorted Gail to the dance. It was not a formal dance, but that didn’t prevent the women from wearing some very glamorous outfits. Gail’s was dark, almost purple, and glistened in the lights. Janelle came in wearing a black dress with a mink stole wrapped around her shoulders looking as elegant as any woman of high fashion.

Ed and Helen were there as well, but they didn’t stay long. They put in an appearance, talked to the people they knew, and then headed home.

And then there was Rose, who came in wearing a red gown with a silver necklace and bracelet.

Charlie immediately went to say “hello”. He kissed her cheek and warmly hugged her. “It’s nice to see you again. You’ve been doing well?”

“Just fine, Charlie. Just fine.” She smiled.

Walt, standing next to Roger, grunted. “Well, he certainly knows her very well.”

Roger elbowed him and pointed to Gail, whose fists were clenched as she turned away.

Walt added, “That was a long time ago, though. They haven’t seen each other since.”

Gail didn’t respond.

Charlie returned minutes later to ask Gail to dance.

“Why didn’t you ask the lady in red?” She snapped .

“I only said hello. Just being polite,” He insisted.

“Your eyes practically jumped out of their sockets looking at her!” Gail was mad.

Charlie grabbed her arm and pulled her onto the dance floor.

“You’ve slept with her! Haven’t you?”

“Once,” he admitted. “We were both hurting and we needed someone.” He was ready when she tried to pull away from him. He kept a tight grip on her. “I love seeing you jealous!”

The statement gave her pause. Finally, she smiled. “Okay! I am jealous! You’d do well not to talk to her again this evening, or I’ll scratch her eyes out!”

Charlie rested his cheek against hers. “I believe you would!”

Her hand touched his pocket and heard something clatter in it. She reached in and found a hotel key. “What’s this?” She stopped dancing. “You got her hotel key already!”
“That’s not her key,” Charlie insisted .

“You’re lying!” She was no longer dancing, and he couldn’t control this level of anger venting from her.

“I can prove it to you! It’s not her key!” He insisted. “I rented an entire floor of rooms for people too intoxicated to drive.”

“Or for you and her to sleep in!” she snapped. “If it’s not her room, show me! I dare you!”

Charlie was mad, now. “Fine.” He grabbed her above the elbow and led her to the elevator, forcing her into the elevator. He punched the floor button a little harder than necessary and watched the door close, his eyes on her.

“What if,” he said, “We wanted to . . . do something tonight? Wouldn’t it have been nice to have a room available?”

“I’m saving myself for marriage! Someday I hope to find someone who wants a marriage more than sleeping around!” she snapped at him.

The elevator opened and he waved for her to exit, once again taking her arm and leading her to the hotel room. He twisted the key and waved her inside .

She was beginning to realize that this might not have been such a good idea. She was alone with him in a hotel room. She kept her distance from him.

“Look around! Tell me if you find any of her belongings, or mine!” Charlie leaned against the wall, arms folded, waiting.

She looked around the room and came back to him. He was blocking the exit. “Fine! It’s an empty room! That still doesn’t prove anything!”

“I kept a key in case we—you and I—wanted to be alone.” He put the key in her hand.

She stared at it. “Okay, I’m sorry. Can we go now?”

“Not yet. There’s something I wanted to show you. The reason I chose this room.” He reached up and shut off the light. “It’s better in the dark.”

“Charlie!” She felt his hand move around her waist while the other hand guided her towards the bed. Her legs were stiff, attempting to redirect his lead. Her high heels were catching on the carpet and making it easier for him to keep her moving. She slipped out of them and felt the carpet beneath her feet. She’d managed to keep herself away from the bed, but he was directing her past the foot of the bed and around to the other side where she would have no escape.

“Charlie, please!” she begged.

Charlie reached up with his left hand and opened the curtains. “Take a look at that view!”

She hesitated, finally turning her gaze towards the lights of Chicago and the lake beyond. It was very pretty, and there was sufficient snow on the ground to add to the serenity of the scene. She smiled, hoping that was all he was trying to show her. His hand was still around her waist, though.

Charlie turned her to face him. “You’re a woman, aren’t you? I mean, you’re not a little girl!”

“I am!” she proclaimed, backing away as he tried to move closer. She ran into the bureau and was trapped as he continued to press in on her.

His hands touched her hips as he leaned forward to kiss her lips. She was scared, unresponsive at first, but with each kiss she changed, relaxed, responded. He placed his nose close to her ear, the warmth of his face so relaxing.

“Are you ready?” He asked, kissing her cheek.

Her eyes were half closed. She tried to object, but his hands, his proximity, his kisses prevented her. “Yes!” she finally accepted the inevitable.

Then Charlie heard the Voice. “If you sleep with her now, your marriage won’t last.”

How unfair! He thought. If he loved her, why would now versus later matter? But no matter how he argued
