NAVY MEN PRESIDENTS
ETERNAL FLAME NOVELS
BY ED DELKER
November 2008
Ninety year-old Red Teagan, former Secretary of the Navy, sends a letter to Admiral Rowles, CNO, stating a Navy Man was responsible for President Kennedy’s death! Two Navy officers interview Red Teagan and learn Secretary Teagan was Jack Kennedy’s closest and truest best friend no one ever heard about. Red takes the Navy officers on an enthralling journey from when he first met the future president till the fateful day a rouge operation, Eternal Flame, claims President Kennedy’s life.
Book 1- Eternal Flame Trilogy, Love ♦ Laughter ♦ Courage
Red Teagan’s cautionary tale describes himself and Jack as young men of their generation seeking love, surviving on laughter and finding courage to cope with the horrors of war. A chance meeting on a remote island during WWII by Red and Jack with three other junior Navy officers, Johnson, Nixon and Ford, opens all of their eyes to great possibilities. A native mystic decrees these four men are destined to become President but their collective destiny flows through Jack’s destiny.
Book 2 - Eternal Flame Trilogy, Mastema
The future Navy Men Presidents return home and resume their peacetime lives and careers. Red works behind the scene on Jack’s campaign for Congress. Nixon, Johnson and Ford also rapidly advance their political careers. However, evil followed Red and Jack home from the war and threatens Jack’s life. Red and other veterans from the war battle a serial killer called Mastema.
Book 3 - Eternal Flame Trilogy, Operation Eternal Flame Destiny Achieved
Undersecretary of the Navy, Red Teagan is viewed as nothing more than Jack’s wartime crony. When the CIA identifies a rogue operation within the U.S. Government with the mission to assassinate Jack, Red once again marshals the Navy Men and wartime comrades to protect Jack.
Preface
Twenty-six of the first thirty-four Presidents of the United States served in the U.S. Army, state militias and the Continental Army. Twelve presidents were generals. None were Navy Men.
In the latter half of the Twentieth Century, six Presidents were Navy Men. All were products of WWII and all were junior officers. Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford served in the South Pacific Theater of War in 1942-43. During the latter half of WWII, President George H. W. Bush served in the Central Pacific and President Carter attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. The first four Navy Men Presidents controlled the White House for sixteen consecutive years, 1961 to 1977. Sweeping changes in American society occurred. Both great accomplishments and great tragedies marked their Presidencies. President Carter defeated President Ford only to lose re-election to President Reagan who was succeeded by the last Navy Man President of the Twentieth Century, George H. W. Bush.
This fictional story about the Navy Men Presidents revolves around a hypothetical chance encounter on Vella Lavella by not just the first four Navy Men Presidents but also other Navy Men who will help shape the Navy Men Presidents’ destinies.
Make no mistake this novel is a work of fiction. The story is inspired by historical events during the mid-twentieth century but should not be considered historical fiction. This novel is about the interplay between men and women facing tremendous conflict and relying on true friends for support. The fictional Navy Men Presidents and supporting characters are unique and should not be viewed by the reader as the actual historical figures or interpretation of their actions during historical events. Book Two follows the fictional Navy Men adventures through Post World War II to the start of the 1960 Presidential Campaign.
While the Navy Men Presidents novels were inspired by historical events, these novels solely contain fictitious characters, places and circumstances. These novels are not interpretations of history or the actions of actual people. The dialogue, attributes, motives, and actions by the fictional characters are solely the product of dramatic and narrative purposes.
A letter to the reader from the Vella LaVella Mystic:
I have no memory of my mother or father. Christian missionaries found me wandering the jungle of Vella LaVella in the Solomon Islands of the South Pacific. They raised me as their own. But, I have no name of my own. Along my life path, I have been known by many names, Mystic, Ghost, Spirit, Vatu, Wa-Tu and Gabriel.
God has revealed himself to me through holy men of many faiths. I see God’s path for others. But, man has free will not to follow his path. My burden is to keep men of greatness true to their destinies for the good of all people. I am a spirit keeper and warrior battling the evil determined to stop men of destiny.
During the great war between the Japanese and Americans, four Navy Men with destinies that altered world history came to Vella LaVella. All their paths flowed through the one called Jack. Lyndon, Dick and Jerry would not reach their destinies unless Jack first reached his great yet tragic destiny.
One night on Vella LaVella, these four Navy Men of destiny shared a meal with two other Navy Men, Jack’s friend, Red, and the Navy Men doctor. However improbable, the four Navy Men of destiny first saw God’s path for them. My friend Red and the doctor were their spirit keepers.
As quickly as the swirling winds of war brought the Navy Men together, they were flung along their own diverging paths. They rekindled their civilian lives each entering politics feeling the evil of the great war in the Pacific Was forever gone. They were wrong.
The story my friend, Red, will tell you is how the Navy Men’s paths once again began converging on an inevitable day in Dallas, November 22, 1963.

Prologue
Late Fall 1945 on Cape Cod Jack returns to his refuge, sailing. Just before first light, Jack Kennedy relieves the helmsman of the family sailing yacht. It is more than a tradition with Jack to steer the yacht as the sun rises. He finds it to be a deeply spiritual experience. He always thanks God for the day ahead and the company of true friends who survived the war like he did.
Shortly after sunrise, the wife of Jack’s best friend, Red, emerges from the galley with a cup of fresh coffee. As usual, Jack calls Janine Sullivan-Teagan by his nickname for her, "Dr. Bride, the alpenglow of the rising sun celebrates your beauty. What brings you to my sanctuary?" Janine replies, "The sea really is your sanctuary." Jack contently looks around surveying the horizon and says, "Yes, it is." Janine hands Jack his cup of coffee and he takes a sip. Usually, it is Janine that senses turmoil in Jack. This morning the roles are reversed and Jack asks, "Something troubling you about Red? Your brother? His wife?" Janine says, "Yes on all counts! It was really creepy. Last night all three of them had a nightmares about Pinipel Island at the same time!"
Jack becomes intently serious and says, "Red told me that when he led the attack on the Pinipel POW camp and rescued your brother, he felt the presence of evil, pure evil." Janine replies, "My sister-in-law, Cheryl, was part of the team that recovered the POWs’ remains and she said the same thing when we were roommates in Japan after V-J day. Oh! That headhunter friend of yours was there too. He told Cheryl he felt the presence of evil too." Jack asks, "What does your brother, Jason, say about it?" The usually unflappable Janine looks pale and hesitantly says, "He doesn’t remember much but he said the Japanese guards called his interrogator "She Devil". Jack, do you think the Devil was actually on Pinipel and followed them back to the States?"
Chapter 1
On a January morning in 1946, a very distinguished Melanesian gentleman leaves his tidy London home and walks toward his office at 220 Baker Street. He wears the finest clothes from Savile Row clothiers. Nothing is out of place. He looks around and sees vacant lots where homes and businesses were destroyed by the German bombing. The ruble is gone and the rebuilding of London is well underway. The sight of tradesmen building new homes and offices gives him joy.
