World War II was a conflict between two groups of countries, the Axis and the Allies. Let’s find out what countries were on each side, and what happened to them.
Choosing sides
World War II started in 1939 and ended in 1945. But it did not start from nothing. The war was in some ways a continuation of a conflict that reached back to the 1850s.

In Europe, as Germany and Italy formed out of many smaller states, both countries felt they had to “catch up” with countries like Great Britain, France, and Spain, which had been organized much longer and which had huge overseas territories. Those territories provided raw materials, food, and workers for the country that controlled them, and Germany and Italy wanted their “fair share”.
In Asia, Japan watched China, once the most powerful empire in the world, fall under control of European countries. Japan determined to avoid the same fate and started building itself up. It also wanted overseas territories, because Japan is poor in natural resources like iron, fossil fuels, and rubber.
